Matric: the National Senior Certificate

South African schooling ends with matric, the National Senior Certificate (NSC), written at the end of grade 12 since 2008. The certificate is quality-assured by Umalusi and lists each subject with a percentage and an achievement level from 1 to 7. It also shows the pass type: a bachelor pass needs level 4 (50 to 59%) or better in four designated subjects, a diploma pass level 3. Certificates are in English.

Before 2008 learners wrote the Senior Certificate, passed with or without matriculation exemption, which was needed for degree study. Older certificates, and the school reports (rapport) of Afrikaans-medium schools, are often in Afrikaans or bilingual and are translated in full. See our Afrikaans page.

Subjects, levels and verification

Language subjects are named by level — Home Language or First Additional Language — so a certificate may show Afrikaans Home Language and English First Additional Language. We keep those titles exactly, because an evaluator reads them to judge English study. See also our language certificate page.

For an apostille, Umalusi verifies NSC certificates from November 2008, and the Department of Basic Education confirms earlier results. US schools and evaluators generally verify through their own channels. For university records, see our transcript page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is my matric certificate a high school diploma?

It is the national school-leaving qualification. What it corresponds to in the US is for an evaluator to decide; we translate what it says.

My Senior Certificate is in Afrikaans.

Pre-2008 certificates often are. We translate the whole certificate, including the exemption endorsement and the issuing department's stamp.

My NSC is in English.

Then it needs no translation, unless a stamp or endorsement is in another language.
