A civil record, and the option the husband chose
A Senegalese marriage certificate is an extract from the marriage register (extrait du registre des actes de mariage) kept by the civil registrar (officier d'état civil) of the commune. Under the Family Code of 1972 the registrar asks both spouses for their consent and asks the husband which option he takes: monogamy, limited polygamy or polygamy. If he chooses none, polygamy applies. The option and the matrimonial property regime are recorded, and both are translated exactly as written.
US officers sometimes ask about the polygamy option, so the words option de monogamie or option de polygamie are rendered word for word, never paraphrased. What the option means for your case is a question for the office or your lawyer. The record is in French whatever language the wedding was in. See our French page.
Religious weddings, recorded marriages and late registration
Many Senegalese marry by religious or customary rite only: in the 2013 census, 72.7% of marriages were not registered at the civil registry, and 88.4% in rural areas. A customary marriage can be recorded afterwards (mariage constaté), and once the one-year limit has passed it can only be entered in the register on a court judgment. Your certificate says which route was taken, and that wording is kept.
For a spousal petition, USCIS will also want to see how any earlier marriage ended, through a divorce judgment or a death certificate. Senegal has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 23 March 2023, but USCIS does not require an apostille; a court or state agency might.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Our marriage was only religious. Is there a certificate?
Not until it is recorded at the civil registry. Ask the mairie about having it recorded; after a year this takes a court judgment.
The certificate says "option de polygamie".
We translate it word for word. What it means for your case is a question for the office or your lawyer.
Does the certificate need an apostille?
Not for USCIS. Since March 2023 Senegal issues apostilles if a court or agency asks for one.
