From the mairie of the place of death
A death in Senegal is declared to the civil registrar of the commune where it happened, usually with a medical certificate of death, and the family receives an extract of the death record (extrait du registre des actes de décès). It gives the deceased's names, date and place of death, and the record number, with the registrar's seal and signature. Records are in French. See our French page.
Many deaths are never declared. In the 2013 census, 63.6% of deaths had not been declared to the civil registry, and 85.8% in rural areas. If the one-year limit has passed, the death can only be registered on a court judgment. If you hold that judgment, we translate it too, since it explains the late registration date.
What US offices use it for
In US cases a Senegalese death certificate usually proves that a previous marriage ended before a new marriage, supports a widow's or orphan's petition, or opens an estate. Insurers and courts sometimes want the cause of death, which may be on the medical certificate and not on the civil extract. Check which document states it before you order.
Names follow the Senegalese order of given names (prénoms) then family name (nom), and spellings such as Ndiaye and N'Diaye vary between documents. We copy each as printed. USCIS does not need an apostille.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
The death was never registered.
Then there is no extract yet. After a year registration takes a court judgment; we translate whatever you obtain.
Does the extract show the cause of death?
Not always. The medical certificate may; we translate either or both.
The name is spelled differently on the death certificate.
We copy it exactly as printed. Common with Senegalese names; the office may ask for proof it is the same person.
