Always a court decision
Article 157 of the Senegalese Family Code allows only two ways out of a marriage, even a customary one: divorce by mutual consent, recorded by a judge, and divorce pronounced by a court on the petition of one spouse. Either way, the document you hold is a court decision (jugement), with the court's name, the case number, the date and the clerk's certification, not a certificate issued by the mairie.
A spouse who was repudiated, or divorced only before a religious authority, is still legally married in Senegal. The Supreme Court has said so in a bigamy case. If your file contains a religious divorce, we translate it and call it what it is, but the court judgment is what proves the marriage ended. See our French page.
Mutual-consent terms and the note on the marriage record
In a divorce by mutual consent the spouses do not have to give a reason, and the judgment records the arrangements they agreed for the children, support and property. A contested judgment sets out the grounds and the court's orders. US offices usually want the full judgment, so we translate all of it, recitals and orders included, and keep the paragraph numbering.
Once final, the divorce is noted in the margin of the marriage record, and a newer extract of the marriage certificate will show it. If you were separated by a court before divorcing, see the legal separation page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
I was divorced by repudiation, not in court.
Senegalese law does not recognise that as a divorce. We can translate any document you have, but the receiving office will look for a court judgment.
Do you translate the whole judgment or just the decision?
The whole judgment. Offices usually want every page.
Can I show a new marriage extract with the divorce noted on it instead?
Some offices accept it as extra proof. Ask the office; we translate either or both.
