The Ministry of Culture certifies indigenous interpreters

Peru's Ministerio de Cultura runs a national register of interpreters and translators of indigenous languages, with a training and certification programme, created so that speakers of Quechua, Aymara, Ashaninka and the Amazonian languages can be heard in courts and public services.

That certification is a real credential with a register number, and a US reader will not recognise it. We name the ministry, the language and the register reference.

Forty-eight languages

Peru recognises forty-eight indigenous languages — Quechua and Aymara in the highlands and the great majority in Amazonia — with official status in the areas where they predominate.

A certificate naming one of them attests a language rather than a dialect, and the Quechua varieties in particular differ substantially between regions. We name the language and the variety.

Spanish certification

Spanish proficiency for foreign learners is certified by Peruvian university language centres and through the international DELE and SIELE examinations taken at centres in Peru.

A university course certificate and an international examination result are different documents, and we name which the client holds.

The DNI, and the language field

Peruvian certificates identify the candidate by DNI, eight digits with a verification digit, which does not change.

Peru has recorded indigenous language as a field in civil registration and identity systems in support of language rights, which is worth knowing when a document names one. See our Spanish page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
