Idoneidad — the certificate to practise

Panama requires professionals to hold an idoneidad — a certificate of professional fitness issued by a technical board for the profession — and an expert without the relevant idoneidad is not competent to opine.

The idoneidad number appears on the report and it is the first thing a reader should be able to check. We reproduce it rather than describing the author as a qualified professional.

IMELCF, and the forensic institute

Criminal and much civil forensic work runs through the Instituto de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, an autonomous institution, whose reports carry case numbers and institutional signatures.

An IMELCF report is an institutional determination rather than a retained opinion, and we name the institute and the section.

The peritos, and the parties

In civil matters the parties may each name a perito and the court a third, and the court may also appoint a single expert. The appointment resolution states which and what was asked.

We name who appointed each expert, because it determines how the report is weighed.

The cédula, and the Canal

Experts and parties are identified by cédula with its province prefix, and companies by RUC. We reproduce the prefix, which is part of the identifier.

Panama's maritime registry and canal traffic generate a substantial body of marine survey and casualty expertise, which has its own technical vocabulary. Tell us the field when you order. See our Spanish page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
