The 2014 Family Code
Nicaragua's Código de Familia of 2014 restated filiation, creating specialised family courts and setting out voluntary acknowledgment and judicial declaration routes.
So documents from before and after cite different law and an older citation is not defective. We reproduce the code and article as cited.
Reconocimiento, and the registry
Acknowledgment may be made in the birth registration, by later appearance before the municipal Registro del Estado Civil, by public instrument or in a will, and it is recorded against the birth entry.
A certification issued afterwards shows the father with the tomo, folio and asiento. Many older entries are handwritten and we transcribe what is legible.
Judicial declaration, and DNA
Where a father does not acknowledge, a judicial declaration is available and the Family Code provides for biological evidence.
A judgment and a voluntary acknowledgment are different instruments and we name which the document is, because the consequences on a later challenge differ.
The cédula, and the Caribbean coast
The cédula number encodes the municipality of registration and the date of birth with a check letter, and it identifies each person on the record.
