Municipal registries, one central record
Nicaraguan births are registered by the Registro del Estado Civil de las Personas of the municipality, with the Registro Central under the Consejo Supremo Electoral holding the consolidated record and issuing the identity card.
A change of name is obtained judicially and recorded against the municipal entry, and a certification issued afterwards carries the marginal note. We name the municipality and the book references exactly.
Reposición, and the older books
Nicaraguan files frequently contain a reposición de partida — the reconstruction of an entry lost or destroyed — which reads to an unfamiliar eye like a record created after the fact. It is lawful, it has its own instrument, and it is not a name change.

The cédula, and its format
The cédula de identidad is written as a municipality code, the date of birth and a serial with a check letter — so the number encodes both where the person was registered and when they were born, on its face.

Two surnames, and the Caribbean coast
Nicaraguans carry paternal then maternal surnames, and we keep both and make the order explicit.
On the Caribbean coast, Creole English, Miskito and Rama names follow different patterns and a person may hold documents under an English name and a Hispanicised one. That is a spelling and usage difference more often than a legal change. See our Spanish page.
