Voluntary recognition, by notarial act
Greek voluntary recognition (εκούσια αναγνώριση) is made by notarial deed or by will, and where the child is a minor it requires the mother's consent, also given by notarial deed.
So a complete Greek file contains two notarial instruments, and a US office given only the father's declaration has half of it. Where the mother refuses or cannot consent, a judicial route applies.
The surname, and what recognition changes
A child born outside marriage takes the mother's surname, and recognition allows the parents to agree that the child take the father's or both, declared before the registrar.
So the surname change is a separate declaration from the recognition itself, and a child may be recognised and keep the mother's surname. We name each instrument.
The ληξιαρχική πράξη, and the annotation
The recognition is recorded against the ληξιαρχική πράξη γέννησης, the birth registration act held by the municipality, and a certificate issued afterwards carries the annotation.
That annotated certificate is what a foreign office should be sent, and we name the municipality and the act number as printed.
The patronymic, and transliteration
Greek documents carry a father's name field as identifying data, and recognition fills it where it was previously blank or showed a different entry.
Greek romanises several ways, so a spelling difference against a passport is usually not a discrepancy. See our Greek page.
