Eheurkunde and the register printout
A German Standesamt issues the Eheurkunde, the marriage certificate, and separately a beglaubigter Ausdruck aus dem Eheregister, a certified printout of the register entry which carries annotations the certificate does not.
Where the point is to show a divorce, a name change or a later correction, the register printout is the document. The certificate is the one couples hold and it is not always the one that answers. See our German birth certificate page.
Umlauts, and married-name choices
German umlauts are commonly expanded in foreign records — Müller becomes Mueller — so a passport, a German certificate and a US record can carry three spellings of one name. All three are the same name. We reproduce the German spelling and note a genuine difference rather than silently adopting one.
German law offers several married-name options, including a double-barrelled Begleitname, and the certificate records which was chosen. That choice is translated as recorded rather than simplified. See our German page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
