Military status for men of conscription age
Egyptian men are subject to conscription, and those of service age require clearance to travel — the status is administered through the military service authority and affects whether a passport can be issued or used.
So an Egyptian man's file may contain a service completion or exemption certificate that a US reader will not recognise as relevant. We name it and translate it with the passport.
The fourteen-digit national number
The passport carries the national number — fourteen digits encoding the century of birth, the date, the governorate of registration, a serial with a sex digit and a check digit. It does not change and it locates the holder's registration on its face.
We reproduce it in Western digits so the office can use it, and we name the governorate the code indicates where it helps the reader.
Four name elements
Egyptian legal names commonly run given name, father, grandfather and family name, so a full name has four elements and a US two-field form loses two.
A person may use a shortened form on one document and the full form on another, which is not a change of name. We reproduce the full name as printed and say which elements are which.
Arabic and English, and the numerals
Egyptian passports are bilingual, so a translation of the biodata page is frequently unnecessary — ask the office first. Supporting documents in Arabic do need translating.
Eastern Arabic numerals on supporting documents are given in Western digits, and Hijri dates alongside Gregorian ones are converted individually. See our Arabic page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
