Parental authority is not the same concept as custody
Civil-law systems speak of patria potestad, autoridad parental, Sorgerecht — parental authority, which is a bundle of rights that can be held jointly even where a child lives with one parent. It is not the same as US custody, and translating it as "custody" collapses a distinction that a court cares about.
