The OIB is on everything
Every Croatian legal and natural person carries an OIB, an eleven-digit identification number used for individuals and companies alike. It does not change with a name and it appears on the passport.
It is the cleanest identifier in a Croatian file, and the fact that companies carry the same kind of number occasionally confuses a reader looking at a document naming both.
Citizenship by descent, held across the border
Croatia grants citizenship to people of Croatian descent, and substantial numbers of Croatian passports are held by residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina and by the wider diaspora.
So a Croatian passport may belong to someone whose birth certificate is Bosnian and whose entries were made under Yugoslav administration. We name the issuing state and the original registering authority for each document.
Yugoslav-era records behind it
Births registered before 1991 were recorded under Yugoslav administration, and a modern Croatian extract restates that entry. A register book may hold entries made by an authority that no longer exists.
The passport shows no parents; the izvadak iz matice rođenih does, and Croatia issues it electronically through e-Građani with a verification reference we transcribe.
Diacritics, and the machine-readable line
Croatian uses č, ć, đ, š and ž, and the machine-readable zone strips them — Ćosić becomes COSIC, Đurđević becomes DJURDJEVIC or DURDEVIC depending on the transliteration used.
