The EGN, with its leading zeros
The Bulgarian EGN is ten digits encoding the date of birth and sex, with month offsets marking births before 1900 and after 1999. It does not change with a name and it appears on the passport and the identity card.
It frequently begins with a zero, which spreadsheets eat. We reproduce it exactly, because a number missing its leading digit fails every verification.
Three name elements, two of them gendered
Bulgarian names have three parts: the given name, a patronymic formed from the father's given name with -ov or -ova, and the family name. Both the patronymic and the surname are gendered.
So a daughter is Ivanova where her father is Ivanov, and a US two-field form loses the patronymic entirely. We reproduce all three and say which is which.
The 2009 transliteration law
Bulgaria legislated an official Latin transliteration in 2009, and it frequently differs from the spelling a Bulgarian-American family has used for decades.
A great many apparent discrepancies are exactly this. The passport carries the official rendering and an older US record may carry the family one, and we say that they are the same name.
The identity card, and the birth certificate
The Bulgarian лична карта is a travel document within the EU and prints the permanent address, which the passport does not.
