The matični ured, and church marriages
Croatian marriages are registered by the matični ured, the registry office, which issues an extract from the register of marriages (izvadak iz matice vjenčanih). A church wedding in Croatia can carry civil effect, but the civil register entry is what a foreign office will want — a parish document alone is not it.

Diacritics, and citizenship by descent
Croatian uses č, ć, đ, š and ž, and stripping them changes names — Ćosić and Cosic look like different families and are one. We reproduce the Croatian spelling and note a genuine difference from a passport.
Croatian records are frequently ordered for citizenship by descent, where a chain of documents has to match name for name across generations. A spelling silently standardised at any link breaks the chain, which is why we note variations rather than resolving them. See our Croatian page.
What USCIS requires
