Registered by ZAGS, not by the church

A Belarusian marriage is valid when the civil registry office (ZAGS) registers it, and the certificate it issues (svidetelstvo o zaklyuchenii braka) is what US offices want. A church wedding has no civil effect on its own; any church document is a religious record and does not replace the ZAGS certificate.

The certificate records each spouse's surname before and after the marriage, which matters when a wife's surname changes form — Russian and Belarusian surnames take feminine endings (Ivanov, Ivanova). We translate the endings as printed. See our Belarusian page.

For a green card file

Most certificates in circulation are in Russian, and pre-1991 ones are Soviet forms. Belarus has applied the Apostille Convention since 1992; USCIS does not require an apostille, only a complete certified translation of every stamp on the front and back.

If either spouse was married before, the earlier divorce is usually asked for as well — see our Belarusian divorce certificate page and our marriage green card page. Russian-language certificates are also covered on our Russian page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

We also had a church wedding.

Any church document is a religious record. US offices want the ZAGS certificate, which we translate; the church document can be translated too if you want it in the file.

Why is my surname spelled differently from my husband's?

Russian and Belarusian surnames have feminine forms, so Ivanov becomes Ivanova. That is grammar, not a discrepancy.

The certificate is in Russian.

Normal. Russian is a state language of Belarus. Order the language the document is written in.
