Two records, two authorities
Bangladesh keeps birth registration under the BRIS system through local government registrars, and the adult identity record with the Election Commission, which issues the NID. A change of name has to be made in both, through different procedures.
That is why a Bangladeshi packet frequently shows the new name on the NID and the old one on the birth registration, or the reverse. We identify which record each document comes from.
Affidavit and gazette, for a substantive change
A correction of a spelling error is an application to the registrar with supporting documents. A genuine change of name follows the affidavit and gazette notification route, and the gazette page is what offices treat as proof.
The newspaper publication and the affidavit are part of the file, and we translate each with its date and the publication name rather than only the gazette.
The BRN and the NID number
The birth registration number is seventeen digits with the year of birth at the front, and the NID number has been ten digits since a re-issue replaced the older seventeen-digit format.
A person may therefore hold documents under two different NID formats, which is a reissue rather than a discrepancy. We reproduce each as labelled.
Bangla, and the naming pattern
Many Bangladeshi names carry honorifics and religious elements — Md., Mst., Abdul, Begum — placed where a US form expects a given name, and a person may drop or add them across documents without any legal change.
Bangla romanises inconsistently and there is no official scheme, so Chowdhury, Choudhury and Chaudhuri are one name. We follow the passport and note the variants. See our Bengali page.
