Certified Translations for Form N-400
Form N-400 asks for fewer documents than a green card case, but the ones it does ask for are often foreign. Any document you submit with it that is not in English needs a certified English translation.

Documents Form N-400 usually involves
The ones that are often in another language:
- the marriage certificate, when applying after three years as the spouse of a US citizen, and divorce decrees for earlier marriages
- court records for any arrest, charge or conviction abroad, with their final disposition
- name change records, where the name has changed
- documents for an exception, such as a medical disability form
Before you order
A foreign court record must show the outcome as well as the charge. If yours ends without one, get the final disposition before translating, so you do not pay twice.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need certified translations for Form N-400?
For every document in a language other than English, yes: a complete English translation with the translator's certification that it is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)). Documents already in English need nothing.
Do the translations have to be notarized?
No. USCIS and the NVC ask for a certified translation, not a notarized one.
How much does it cost?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words. Most certificates are one or two pages; most orders are delivered within a few hours, and 1–3 pages within 24 hours at most.
