How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026

William Paterson University asks international first-year applicants for a notarized English translation of any academic document not in English, and graduate applicants for a separate, word-for-word English translation; neither rule says who must translate.

William Paterson University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, with notarization added at checkout.

Transfer and graduate applicants also need a course-by-course evaluation from an evaluation service, which we do not provide.

William Paterson at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

William Paterson's first-year page asks for a notarized English translation without restricting who makes it (international freshman), and its graduate requirements ask for a separate word-for-word English translation (graduate requirements); a certified translation from eVerbary, notarized for $34.90 per order, is that kind of translation. William Paterson requirements in detail

Translation (first-year)

A notarized English translation of transcripts, diploma or any other academic document not in English (International freshman admissions).

Translation (graduate)

Documents in the original language with a separate, word-for-word English translation; dual-language transcripts are not acceptable (International graduate admissions requirements).

Who may translate

Not stated.

Evaluation (first-year)

None from outside: the Office of International Admissions performs a grade conversion of foreign transcripts (International freshman admissions).

Evaluation (transfer)

Course-by-course, from any NACES or AICE member; TEC, Atlas and IEE are recommended with discounts (International transfer admissions).

Evaluation (graduate)

Course-by-course from NACES, AICE or IFCS members (requirements); the how-to-apply page lists NACES, AICE, Education Choices or Atlas, completed within the past five years (how to apply).

Where to send

First-year records by email to international@wpunj.edu (International freshman admissions).

First-year applicants: notarized translation, no outside evaluation

William Paterson asks first-year international applicants to email their records from every high school or secondary school attended, with diplomas if completed, and to include a notarized English translation of any academic document that is not in English (international freshman).

Exam results such as IB, AP, IGCSE or A-Levels, CSEC, WAEC, NECO or CAPE belong in the same email, so translate those certificates too if they are not in English.

You do not order a credential evaluation for admission: the Office of International Admissions converts the grades of foreign transcripts itself.

That makes the translation the document the office reads, so it must be complete, including the grading scale.

An eVerbary certified translation with notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) meets the notarized requirement.

Graduate applicants: a separate word-for-word translation and an evaluation

For graduate study, transcripts and degree certificates must be in the original language of instruction, each accompanied by a separate, word-for-word English translation; dual-language transcripts are not acceptable, and official transcripts are sent directly by the university (graduate requirements).

On top of that, a course-by-course evaluation of all foreign credentials must be forwarded by an approved professional evaluation service.

The two graduate pages name slightly different services: the international requirements list NACES, AICE and IFCS, and the general how-to-apply page lists NACES-accredited, AICE-endorsed, Education Choices or Atlas Credential Evaluations, adding that international coursework needs an evaluation completed within the past five years and that unofficial PDFs may be used for review, but not screenshots or image files (how to apply).

Transfer and second-degree applicants

Applicants with post-secondary study abroad arrange a course-by-course evaluation sent to the Office of International Admissions.

Any NACES-accredited or AICE-endorsed service works; William Paterson recommends The Evaluation Company and IEE through custom applications for WP applicants, and Atlas Credential Evaluations with the discount code INST3030 (international transfer).

Each agency has its own translation rule; The Evaluation Company, for example, accepts outside translations only from ATA-certified translators (TEC), which eVerbary can provide on request.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For William Paterson that means we translate and notarize your documents; the course-by-course evaluation for transfer or graduate admission comes from an evaluation service.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does William Paterson need a notarized translation?

Yes, for first-year applicants: any academic document not in English needs a notarized English translation (International freshman admissions). eVerbary adds notarization for $34.90 per order.

Do first-year applicants need a WES or ECE evaluation?

No. The Office of International Admissions performs its own grade conversion (International freshman admissions).

Can I send a transcript that has English and my language on the same page?

Not for graduate admission: dual-language transcripts are not acceptable, and each document needs a separate word-for-word translation (International graduate admissions requirements).

Which evaluation services does William Paterson accept for transfer credit?

Any NACES-accredited or AICE-endorsed service; TEC, Atlas and IEE are recommended with discounts (International transfer admissions).

How recent must a graduate evaluation be?

Completed within the past five years (Graduate admissions: how to apply).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
