How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026

The University of San Diego publishes no translation rule of its own: transfer applicants with college transcripts from abroad must add an official course-by-course evaluation from any NACES member, and graduate applicants with a degree from outside the US one from WES, ECE, The Evaluation Company, IERF or FACS.

USD's evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE and IERF, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You order the translation first and send it to the agency; the agency sends USD the evaluation, which we do not provide.

USD at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

USD asks for an official course-by-course evaluation from WES, ECE, TEC, IERF or FACS for graduate admission and from any NACES member for transfer (graduate checklist, transfer), and WES accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES translation rules); ECE and IERF do as well, while TEC asks for a translator certified by ATA. Worth knowing about USD

Course by course

Required for transfer and graduate applicants.

Five graduate agencies

WES, ECE, TEC, IERF and FACS.

Agency to USD

Applicant-emailed reports are not accepted.

USD requirements in detail

Translation

No rule of its own; the translation is what the evaluation agency needs before it can evaluate a record not in English.

Who may translate

Set by the agency. WES, ECE and IERF accept a professional translation; TEC asks for an ATA-certified translator.

Transfer

Official course-by-course evaluation of foreign college transcripts from any NACES member, such as WES, ECE, IERF or SpanTran; without it the application is incomplete (Transfer applicants: transferring from abroad).

Graduate

Official course-by-course evaluation from WES, ECE, TEC, IERF or FACS; master's applicants for the bachelor's degree, doctoral applicants for bachelor's and master's (Graduate international applicants: application checklist).

Delivery

Sent electronically by the agency to the graduate admission office; materials emailed by applicants are not accepted (Graduate international applicants: application checklist).

First-year

Reviewed on the national secondary credential listed for each country; no evaluation or translation rule is published (Undergraduate international applicants).

Transfer credit

Counts as units only, not in the USD GPA, and is analyzed after you confirm enrollment (Transfer applicants: transferring from abroad).

Transfer and graduate: what the evaluation must cover

For transfer, USD's transferring from abroad page asks for official transcripts from every institution and an official course-by-course evaluation of any foreign college or post-secondary record, from any NACES member; it names WES, ECE, IERF and SpanTran.

The application is incomplete without it. Credits from accredited institutions generally transfer with a C- or better, count toward units only and are analyzed after you confirm enrollment.

For graduate study the application checklist narrows the list to five agencies and sets the scope: master's applicants evaluate the bachelor's degree, doctoral applicants both bachelor's and master's, and programs with prerequisites may want an evaluation of that coursework too.

ECE and TEC offer USD applicants a discounted rate through custom links. Reports must reach USD electronically from the agency by the program's international deadline.

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator and does not accept translations by applicants.

ECE accepts complete, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original, even your own, or sells an $85 waiver under which it translates internally for the report.

IERF asks for typed, line-by-line, word-for-word translations and may require a professional one. FACS sets its own rules.

The Evaluation Company accepts outside translations only from translators certified by the American Translators Association, or translates in-house. If you choose TEC for its USD discount, eVerbary can assign an ATA-certified translator on request for the languages ATA certifies.

Need a certified translation for USD?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • University transcripts or mark sheets, for the course-by-course evaluation
  • Bachelor's and master's degree certificates
  • Secondary school leaving credential, for transfer applicants

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to USD

  • The translation goes to the agency with your records (WES, for example, takes it in your WES account). The agency then sends the evaluation to USD: for graduate programs electronically to the graduate admission office, for transfer with your Common Application file (graduate, transfer).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for USD, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For USD that means we translate your records for the agency; the course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you and sent to USD by the agency.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does USD require a certified translation?

USD publishes no translation rule; it requires a course-by-course evaluation for transfer and graduate applicants (transfer, graduate), and the agency sets the translation rule. WES requires a professional translator (WES).

Which evaluation agencies does USD accept for graduate admission?

WES, ECE, The Evaluation Company, IERF and FACS (Graduate international applicants: application checklist).

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for TEC?

Yes, on request through a free quote, for Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) or Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page). ATA certifies no other languages into English (TEC rule).

Do first-year applicants need an evaluation?

USD lists the national credentials it accepts for first-year admission and publishes no evaluation rule for them (Undergraduate international applicants).

Which degrees do master's applicants evaluate?

Only the bachelor's degree; doctoral applicants evaluate both bachelor's and master's (Graduate international applicants: application checklist).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
