How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026
UMGC asks students educated abroad to verify high school completion, if they have fewer than 30 US college credits, with a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES or AICE agency such as WES or ECE, and to earn transfer credit through a NACES course-by-course evaluation; for that evaluation it asks you to provide course descriptions or syllabi translated into English.
UMGC's evaluation agencies, such as WES and ECE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. You order the translation first and send it to the agency; the evaluation is something we do not provide.
UMGC at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
UMGC asks for a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES or AICE agency, naming WES and ECE (students educated abroad), and WES accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES translation rules); UMGC's own instruction to provide course descriptions or syllabi translated into English does not restrict who translates (help article). UMGC requirements in detail
Translation
For the credit evaluation, provide course descriptions or syllabi translated into English (Help Center: international credits and transcript evaluation). Transcripts are translated for the agency, which sets its own rule.
Who may translate
Not stated by UMGC; set by the evaluation agency (WES and ECE accept professional translations).
High school equivalency
With fewer than 30 US college credits: a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES or AICE agency, such as WES or ECE, or a passing GED (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).
Transfer credit
A NACES course-by-course report of all credit with copies of the documents used; UMGC decides acceptability (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).
Delivery
The agency sends the evaluation to UMGC, 3501 University Blvd. East, Adelphi, MD 20783, electronically, by mail or by local pickup in Europe and Asia; documents opened by the student are unofficial (Help Center: international credits and transcript evaluation).
Scope
These rules are for UMGC's US division; UMGC Europe and Asia have their own sites (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).
Course descriptions translated, then a course-by-course report
UMGC's help article lists the steps for international credit: choose a NACES agency, request a course-by-course evaluation, provide course descriptions or syllabi translated into English, pay the agency directly and have it send the evaluation to UMGC (help article).
UMGC adds that every international evaluation must include a course-by-course report of all credit and copies of the documents used, and that it decides how the credit applies (students educated abroad).
Syllabi can run to many pages; ask for a quote with the page count before you order, and translate the transcripts and degree certificates in the same order so the agency receives one consistent set.
What WES and ECE ask for the translation
UMGC names WES and ECE as example agencies (Admission requirements: students educated abroad). WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator and does not accept applicants' own.
ECE accepts a complete, literal translation, including one you make yourself, and sells an $85 waiver under which it translates internally.
For the high school equivalency, students with 30 or more US college credits skip this step; others can use a GED instead of an evaluation (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).

Documents applicants usually translate

- University transcripts and degree certificates
- Course descriptions or syllabi
- Grading scale printed on the transcript
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UMGC
The translations go to the evaluation agency with your forms and payment, not to UMGC; the agency sends the evaluation to UMGC in Adelphi (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).
Do not open the agency's sealed documents yourself: UMGC treats them as unofficial (Help Center: international credits and transcript evaluation).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For UMGC that means we translate your transcripts and course descriptions for the agency; the NACES or AICE course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does UMGC require a translation?
UMGC asks you to provide course descriptions or syllabi translated into English for the credit evaluation (Help Center: international credits and transcript evaluation), and the evaluation agency sets the rule for transcripts.
Do I need an evaluation of my high school diploma?
Only if you have fewer than 30 US college credits; you can also use a GED (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).
Which agencies does UMGC accept?
NACES or AICE agencies for high school equivalency, with WES and ECE as examples; NACES agencies for transfer credit (Admission requirements: students educated abroad).
Where do I send my documents?
To the evaluation agency, with payment; the agency sends the evaluation to UMGC (Help Center: international credits and transcript evaluation).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
