Requirements checked on October 27, 2026 from UMW's public pages (sources).
The University of Mary Washington asks international applicants for official secondary transcripts or exam results, such as mark sheets, matriculation certificates or diplomas, with a certified English translation if they are not in English; transfers add every college transcript, and copies must be certified and attested by a US embassy, a notary public or another official authority.
Its current checklist does not say who must translate; University of Mary Washington accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
An older UMW page that is still online asks for a translation certified by the issuing institution.
UMW at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
UMW's international admissions checklist says "you must also provide a certified English translation" for documents not in English, without restricting who translates (international checklist); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Policy checked on October 27, 2026.

Sample translation: a Brazilian university transcript
This is what an order looks like when it is delivered, with invented names, school and numbers. The original in Portuguese sits next to our English translation, and the PDF starts with the signed certification page. Bracketed text in the translation is a translator's note: each abbreviation is spelled out the first time it appears, and the layout follows the original line for line, so an admissions officer or a credential evaluator can match it without guessing.

What to notice
- CPF, RG, MEC, D.O.U., CH, CR and ENADE are spelled out in brackets the first time they appear, and only then.
- Status codes (AP, RM, RF, AE) are explained on first use, so a course failed and retaken the next term reads correctly.
- Grades, decimal commas and dates stay exactly as printed; the date format is noted once. Converting grades is the evaluator's job.
- Terms, rows and columns follow the original line for line, so each course can be matched at a glance.

UMW requirements in detail
Translation
A certified English translation of secondary transcripts or exam results not in English (International admissions checklist).
Who may translate
Not stated on the current checklist (International admissions checklist); an older page says certified by the issuing institution (older page).
Records
Matriculation certificates, mark sheets or diplomas; transfers add every college attended (International admissions checklist).
Originals or copies
Originals whenever possible; copies certified and attested by a US embassy, a notary public or another official authority (International admissions checklist).
Agencies
Translation and credit evaluation services are available through certified agencies, such as The Evaluation Company and ECE (International admissions checklist).
Where UMW's pages differ
UMW's current international admissions checklist asks for a certified English translation of secondary documents not in English and does not say who must make it (checklist).
The first-year process link on UMW's international page leads to an older page, now under an "international-old" address, which asks for records in English or with a complete, literal English translation certified by the issuing institution (first-year process, older page).
We describe both; ask UMW admissions which one applies if your school cannot certify a translation.
Attested copies and translation
UMW prefers original documents; copies must be certified and attested by a US embassy, a notary public or another official authority (International admissions checklist).
That attestation applies to the copy of your original record. eVerbary can notarize the translation for $34.90 per order if you want a notary on it, but the attested copy of the original is made where you live.
The checklist also points to certified agencies, such as The Evaluation Company and ECE, for translation and credit evaluation services.
Need a certified translation for UMW?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary mark sheets and transcripts
- Matriculation or leaving certificates and diplomas
- College or university transcripts, for transfers
- Bank statements, if not in English
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UMW
Send the official records, or attested copies, with their certified English translations to UMW Admissions (International admissions checklist).
On request we can email the translation directly to the admissions office.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For UMW that means we translate your mark sheets, certificates and transcripts; attested copies of the originals come from an embassy, notary or official authority.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does UMW require a certified translation?
Yes, for secondary documents not in English (International admissions checklist).
Can a translation company translate my records for UMW?
The current checklist does not restrict who translates (International admissions checklist); an older page asks for certification by the issuing institution (older page).
Can I send copies instead of originals?
Yes, if they are certified and attested by a US embassy, a notary public or another official authority (International admissions checklist).
Do I need a credential evaluation?
The checklist says evaluation services are available through certified agencies but does not require one (International admissions checklist).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
