How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026

The University of Alaska Anchorage publishes no translation rule of its own: records from any institution outside the US, including French Canadian ones, must be evaluated by World Education Services, whatever the applicant's citizenship, and Kenyan high school records must come from KNEC.

UAA's evaluation agency, WES, accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You order the translation first and upload it to WES with your records; WES then sends UAA the evaluation, which we do not provide.

Worth knowing about UAA

WES only

No other evaluation agency is named.

Any citizenship

US citizens with records from abroad need WES too.

Kenya: KNEC

Kenyan high school results come straight from KNEC.

UAA requirements in detail

Translation

UAA states no translation rule; non-US records reach it through WES. WES requires translations of documents not in English.

Who may translate

Set by WES: a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency; not the applicant (WES).

Evaluation

All non-US records, including French Canadian, evaluated by WES, which sends UAA the US equivalents (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts).

Who it applies to

Every applicant who attended an institution outside the US, except US military, regardless of citizenship (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts).

Exceptions

US and English Canadian transcripts go directly to UAA; Kenyan high school records must be submitted by KNEC (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts).

Non-degree students

No transcripts are required to take classes without admission to a degree program (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts).

One agency for everyone with records from abroad

UAA's transcript page is short and strict: any non-US record, French Canadian included, must be evaluated by World Education Services, which analyzes the coursework or degree and gives UAA the US equivalents (submit transcripts).

The requirement applies regardless of citizenship, so a US citizen or permanent resident who went to high school or college abroad goes through WES like an international student.

The only exceptions are US and English Canadian transcripts, US military training, and Kenyan high school records, which KNEC must submit.

What WES asks for the translation

WES requires a translation of every document issued in a language other than English, made by a professional translator, for example a certified translation agency; it does not accept translations by applicants and does not translate documents itself.

The translation must be exact and word for word, in the same order as the original, and you upload it in your WES account (WES: translation requirements for a WES evaluation).

Its help center describes the translator as an academic institution or a certified translation service (WES help center).

WES will not accept an English version from the school in place of an independent translation when the original is in another language.

Need a certified translation for UAA?

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to UAA

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

At UAA that means the WES evaluation is ordered by you from WES after the translation; we translate the records WES evaluates.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does UAA accept a translation directly?

UAA reads non-US records only through a WES evaluation (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts); the translation goes to WES.

I am a US citizen who studied abroad. Do I need WES?

Yes. UAA's WES requirement applies regardless of citizenship (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts).

My records are from Quebec. Do they need WES?

Yes. UAA lists French Canadian records among those WES must evaluate (UAA Admissions: submit transcripts).

Can I translate my own documents for WES?

No. WES does not accept translations by applicants (WES).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
