How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026

Sonoma State reads coursework from outside the US through a course-to-course evaluation: The Evaluation Company (TEC, formerly SpanTran) for high school records and WES for college records, and it asks you to give the agency an English translation together with the official documents in the original language; graduate applicants may also use ECE.

Sonoma State's evaluation agencies, such as WES and ECE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary; for high school records sent to TEC, Sonoma State accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary when the translator is individually certified by ATA, which eVerbary provides on request. The evaluation itself is something we do not provide.

Sonoma State requirements in detail

Translation

An English translation given to WES or TEC together with the official documents in the original language (Submit transcripts).

Who may translate

Set by the agency: WES and ECE accept a professional translation; TEC asks for a translator certified by ATA.

Evaluation (undergraduate)

Course-to-course: TEC for high school coursework, WES for college coursework (Submit transcripts).

Evaluation (graduate)

Course-by-course from WES, SpanTran (TEC) or ECE (Graduate and post-baccalaureate applicants).

Documents for the agency

Diploma, certificate, transcripts, mark sheets and the medium of instruction certificate (Submit transcripts).

Where it goes

The agency sends the evaluation; official transcripts go to the Office of Admissions in Rohnert Park, not as email attachments or portal uploads (Submit transcripts).

Application

Through Cal State Apply, with the international transcript evaluation listed among the documents (International applicants).

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

Sonoma State splits the work by level (Submit transcripts).

For college coursework it uses WES, which wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, does not accept translations by applicants and does not translate documents itself.

For high school coursework it uses The Evaluation Company, which accepts outside translations only from translators certified by the American Translators Association, or translates in-house after your application.

Graduate applicants may also choose ECE, which asks for complete, word-for-word translations, lets applicants translate their own documents and sells an $85 Translation Waiver.

For a first-year applicant whose records go to TEC, ask eVerbary for a free quote and say the translation is for TEC; we assign a translator individually certified by ATA for the languages ATA certifies. For college records going to WES, a standard certified translation is enough.

What to send the agency

Sonoma State lists the documents the agency should receive with the translation: the diploma, any certificate, transcripts, mark sheets and a medium of instruction (MOI) certificate, each in the original language as official documents (Submit transcripts).

Translate the MOI letter too if your school issued it in another language. Ask for a course-to-course report and name Sonoma State as the recipient; official transcripts that you email or upload yourself are not accepted.

Sonoma State's international page lists the evaluation among the application documents and its Admissions Office helps applicants who are unsure which type of evaluation they need.

Need a certified translation for Sonoma State?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to Sonoma State

  • The translation and the original-language documents go to the agency: TEC for high school, WES for college (WES takes translations in your WES account) (Submit transcripts, WES).

  • The agency sends its evaluation to Sonoma State; other official transcripts go to the Office of Admissions, 1801 East Cotati Avenue, Rohnert Park, or through a verified electronic provider (Submit transcripts).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for Sonoma State, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Sonoma State that means we translate your records for TEC, WES or ECE; the course-to-course evaluation is ordered by you from the agency after the translation.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
