How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026

FIT requires applicants who attended school outside the US to have their credentials evaluated by a NACES member, and the evaluation must rest on official, authenticated documents and include copies of all documents issued in English or translated into English.

FIT's evaluation agencies, such as WES and ECE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You translate first and the agency evaluates; the evaluation is something we do not provide, and graduate applicants need a course-by-course report even if they studied in English.

Worth knowing about FIT

Authenticated only

No reports based on scans or photocopies.

Translations inside

The evaluation must include English copies.

FIT decides

Evaluations are advisory; FIT sets equivalencies.

FIT requirements in detail

Translation

No separate rule; the NACES evaluation must include copies of all documents issued in English or translated into English.

Evaluation (undergraduate)

From a NACES member, based on official authenticated credentials; provisional or scan-based reports are not accepted (Undergraduate international applicants).

Which report

Secondary school without transfer credit: general or document-by-document with US equivalency, cumulative GPA, English copies and diploma date. College study, GCE AS/A levels and other credentials: course-by-course (Undergraduate international applicants).

Missing English copies

If not all documents are included in English, a course-by-course report is required (Undergraduate international applicants).

Graduate

A course-by-course evaluation with GPA regardless of language of instruction, sent by the agency; most used: WES, Josef Silny, IEE, ECE and The Evaluation Company, or any NACES member (graduate international applicants).

Timing (graduate)

Begin at least 6-8 weeks before the deadline; evaluations can take months (Graduate international applicants).

Transfer credit

Decided at admission from the evaluation; FIT makes all final determinations (transfer students, Undergraduate international applicants).

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

WES requires an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator or translation service and does not accept translations by applicants (WES).

ECE accepts a complete, literal translation in the original format from anyone, including you, and sells an $85 waiver under which it translates for the report (ECE).

Josef Silny accepts outside translators who are ATA-certified in the US (Josef Silny), and The Evaluation Company accepts an outside translator only if certified by ATA (TEC); for those two, eVerbary can assign an ATA-certified translator through a free quote.

Why FIT is strict about the evaluation

FIT accepts only evaluations based on official authenticated credentials, and the report must say so; reports that are provisional or based on scans or photocopies without verification are rejected (Undergraduate international applicants).

For secondary school a general or document-by-document report is enough only if it includes US equivalency, a cumulative GPA, the month and year of the diploma and copies of every document in English; if the English copies are missing, FIT asks for a course-by-course report instead.

That is why translating every page, stamp and grading legend before you open the agency file matters here.

Graduate applicants need a course-by-course evaluation with GPA even if they studied in English, unless their institution is accredited by a US regional accreditor, and the report must reach Graduate Admissions directly from the agency (Graduate international applicants).

FIT treats every evaluation as advisory and makes the final call on credit and equivalency (Undergraduate international applicants).

Need a certified translation for FIT?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • Secondary school diploma and transcripts
  • GCE AS/A level or national exam certificates
  • University transcripts and degree certificates
  • Grading scale of each document

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For FIT that means we translate your records for the agency; the NACES evaluation and the authentication of your credentials are done by the agency.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does FIT require a certified translation?

FIT requires a NACES evaluation that includes your documents in English (Undergraduate international applicants); the agency sets the translation rule, and WES, for example, wants a professional translation (WES).

Can I use a document-by-document evaluation for FIT?

For secondary school without transfer credit, yes, if it includes US equivalency, GPA, diploma date and English copies of all documents; otherwise course-by-course (Undergraduate international applicants).

Will FIT accept an evaluation based on scanned documents?

No. Provisional or scan-based reports without verification are not accepted (Undergraduate international applicants).

I studied in English. Do I still need an evaluation for graduate study?

Yes, a course-by-course evaluation with GPA is required regardless of the language of instruction (Graduate international applicants).

Which agencies do FIT graduate applicants use most?

WES, Josef Silny & Associates, IEE, ECE and The Evaluation Company; any NACES member is accepted (Graduate international applicants).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
