How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026
Bates Technical College asks students with credits from colleges outside the US, or with transcripts not in English, for a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, and asks them to bring the sealed evaluation together with the official transcript translated into English; it does not say who must translate.
Bates Technical College accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The evaluation comes from an agency such as ECE or WES, which we are not.
Bates at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
Bates' International Credits guide asks for the official international transcript "translated into English" without naming a translator type (International Credits guide); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that translation. Policy checked on October 26, 2026.

Worth knowing about Bates
Not in English? Evaluate
Any transcript not in English also needs an evaluation.
Bring both
Sealed evaluation plus translated transcript, at the counter.
Four recommended
ECE, Josef Silny, FIS and WES, or any NACES member.
Bates requirements in detail
Translation
The official international transcript, translated into English, submitted with the evaluation (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
Who may translate
Not stated.
When an evaluation is needed
For credit from colleges outside the US, or whenever the transcript is not in English (Bates Technical College: international students).
Evaluation
Course-by-course, from an independent agency: ECE, Josef Silny & Associates, FIS or WES recommended, or any NACES member (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
Delivery
The agency sends the official report to Bates' Transcript and Credential Evaluator, or you bring it sealed to the Registration Office; do not open sealed documents (Bates Technical College: international students, Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
After it arrives
Confirm receipt with the Registration Office and submit a Request for Credit Evaluation Form (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
Language, not only location, triggers the evaluation
Bates asks for a course-by-course Foreign Transcript Evaluation from students transferring credits from colleges outside the US, and also from students whose transcripts are not in English (international students).
Its International Credits guide then asks you to bring two things to the Registration Office front counter at the Downtown Campus: the officially sealed evaluation report and the official international transcript, translated into English (International Credits guide).
Sealed evaluations may also be mailed to the Registration Office in Tacoma.
So the translation is used twice: by the agency to write the report, and by Bates next to the report. One certified translation serves both; keep a copy for the counter.
The recommended agencies and their translation rules
Bates recommends ECE, Josef Silny & Associates, FIS and WES and accepts any NACES member (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
WES wants a word-for-word translation by a professional translator or service and not one by the applicant. ECE accepts complete, literal translations, including the applicant's own, or sells an $85 Translation Waiver.
Josef Silny & Associates accepts outside translations in the US only from translators certified by the American Translators Association, which eVerbary can provide on request through a free quote.

Documents applicants usually translate
- College or university transcripts from abroad
- Degree or diploma certificates
- Any transcript issued in another language, even from a US-style school
- Passport copies and financial documents for the F-1 application
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Bates
International applicants email documents to international@batestech.edu, or mail them to International Programs, 1101 S. Yakima Ave., Tacoma (Bates Technical College: international students). eVerbary can also email the translation directly to that address on request.
For credit, the translation goes to the agency with your records; then the sealed report and the translated transcript go to the Registration Office, followed by a Request for Credit Evaluation Form (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
At Bates that means the course-by-course evaluation comes from a NACES agency such as ECE or WES; we translate the transcript you give the agency and Bates.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bates Technical College need my transcript translated?
Yes, for credit: the official international transcript translated into English, with the evaluation (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)). Bates does not say who must translate.
My transcript is not in English but my school is in the US. Do I need an evaluation?
Bates' international page says students whose transcripts are not in English must also submit a course-by-course evaluation (Bates Technical College: international students).
Which agencies does Bates accept?
ECE, Josef Silny & Associates, FIS and WES are recommended, and any NACES member is accepted (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
Can I open the evaluation envelope?
No. Bates asks you not to open officially sealed documents (Bates Technical College: International Credits guide (PDF)).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
