The South Carolina Board of Nursing requires every foreign-educated applicant to have a Board-approved service verify their education and send the evaluation directly to the Board, and it approves two: CGFNS International (now TruMerit) and Josef Silny & Associates (JS&A).
The Board sets no translation rule of its own; JS&A accepts outside translations made in the US by translators individually certified by the American Translators Association (ATA), whom eVerbary assigns on request, while TruMerit takes nursing transcripts translated only by the school or by itself.
We translate your nursing records for JS&A; the evaluation, the English test and the NCLEX are separate steps.
South Carolina BON at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
South Carolina BON lists Josef Silny & Associates among its approved credential evaluation services (approved providers), and JS&A accepts outside translations made in the US when the translator is ATA-certified (JS&A services), so a translation by an ATA-certified translator, which eVerbary assigns on request, meets the evaluator's rule. South Carolina BON requirements in detail
Translation
The Board publishes no translation rule; the evaluation service's rule applies (Foreign educated nurse requirements, approved providers).
Who may translate
JS&A: professional, certified English translations (JS&A nursing application); outside translations made in the US by ATA-certified translators (JS&A services). TruMerit: the nursing school, or TruMerit for a fee (TruMerit).
Evaluation
All foreign-educated applicants use a Board-approved service to verify educational equivalency, sent directly to the Board (Foreign educated nurse requirements).
Approved services
CGFNS International and Josef Silny & Associates Foreign Credential Evaluations (Credential evaluation services).
English proficiency
An applicant whose native language is not English passes a Board-approved test, unless nursing education was in English in a listed country; results are valid seven years (English proficiency requirements).
Timing
Applications are valid for one year; the Board recommends completing the evaluation before applying (Credential evaluation services).
Endorsement
Foreign-educated nurses licensed in another US jurisdiction also need the evaluation, verification of their authorization to practice from the country of original licensure and proof of continued competency (Foreign educated nurse requirements).
CGFNS or JS&A: who translates
The Board's foreign-educated page names CGFNS "or another Board-approved credential evaluation service" (Foreign educated nurse requirements), and its list has one other: Josef Silny & Associates (Credential evaluation services).
TruMerit, as CGFNS is now called, asks for nursing transcripts in English translated by the school you attended, or translates them itself for a fee (TruMerit), so an outside translation of your nursing records does not fit its report.
JS&A asks for "professional, certified English translations" that supplement the originals your school sends (JS&A: application for boards of nursing).
Its services page requires ATA-certified translators for outside translations made in the US (JS&A: services and translations), while its FAQ says most professional translations are acceptable, subject to review (JS&A: FAQ). An ATA-certified translator satisfies all three statements.
Evaluation first, within one year
South Carolina applications stay open for one year; if anything is missing after that, you start again and resubmit everything (Credential evaluation services).
The Board therefore recommends finishing the credential evaluation before you apply, and the translation is part of what the evaluator needs before it can start. Order it early.
Exam applicants must also pass an approved English test and the NCLEX; a foreign-educated nurse who is not licensed within three years of first taking the NCLEX must requalify through an approved nursing program (Foreign educated nurse requirements).
Need a certified translation for South Carolina BON?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Nursing school transcripts, with hours of instruction and grades
- Nursing diploma or degree certificate
- Course descriptions (syllabus) for the nursing program
- Nursing license or registration from the country of education
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
- Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.
Submitting the translation to South Carolina BON
For JS&A, the translation goes with your signed application, emailed to processing@jsilny.org or mailed, while your school sends its records directly (JS&A: application for boards of nursing, JS&A: services and translations).
JS&A then sends the evaluation to the South Carolina Board of Nursing; the Board takes it only from the service (Foreign educated nurse requirements).
If you need a translator certified by ATA
Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:
$34.95 per page
Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian
$44.95 per page
Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian
To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for South Carolina BON, what it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).
We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.
For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.
For South Carolina that means we translate your nursing records for JS&A; we do not order the evaluation or the English test, and we cannot send documents on behalf of your school or licensing body.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the South Carolina Board of Nursing accept certified translations?

Which evaluation services does South Carolina accept?
CGFNS International and Josef Silny & Associates (Credential evaluation services).
Can I translate my nursing transcripts myself for TruMerit?
No. TruMerit wants nursing transcripts translated by the school, or by TruMerit for a fee (TruMerit: CES Professional Report).
Do I need an English test?
Yes, if your native language is not English, unless your nursing education was taught in English in one of the listed countries (English proficiency requirements).
Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for JS&A?
Yes, on request. Ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for a JS&A evaluation for the South Carolina Board of Nursing and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA. ATA certifies Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) and Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page) into English.
