Michigan Board of Nursing: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Yes, through the evaluation: Michigan Board of Nursing asks for a credential evaluation, and Josef Silny & Associates (JS&A), one of the agencies it accepts, takes translations by a translator individually certified by ATA, whom eVerbary assigns on request.

The Michigan Board of Nursing says only that transcripts must be translated into English; it does not name a translator.

Registered nurses educated outside the US or Canada need a TruMerit (formerly CGFNS) CES Professional Report or Certification Program certificate, or a Josef Silny & Associates (JS&A) evaluation for boards of nursing, and JS&A accepts outside translations made in the US by translators certified by the American Translators Association (ATA), whom eVerbary assigns on request.

We translate your nursing records; we do not order the evaluation or send transcripts on behalf of your school.

Michigan Board of Nursing at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

Michigan accepts a JS&A Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials for Boards of Nursing from RN applicants educated abroad (licensing guide), and JS&A accepts outside translations made in the US by ATA-certified translators (JS&A services), so a translation by an ATA-certified translator, which eVerbary assigns on request, meets the rule that applies. Michigan Board of Nursing requirements in detail

Translation

Transcripts must be translated into English; the guide does not say by whom (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

Who may translate

Set by the agency: TruMerit wants nursing transcripts translated by the school or by TruMerit (TruMerit); JS&A takes professional, certified translations (JS&A nursing application), from ATA-certified translators when made in the US (JS&A services).

Evaluation (RN)

A TruMerit CES Professional Report, a TruMerit Certification Program certificate, or a JS&A evaluation for boards of nursing, sent directly to LARA (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

Evaluation (LPN)

TruMerit CES, JS&A, or a full course-by-course evaluation by a NACES member (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs); WES, a NACES member, accepts professional translations (WES).

Transcripts

Final official transcripts come directly from the nursing school or an approved credentialing service, by email to bpldata@michigan.gov or by mail (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

Exemptions

Canadian RN graduates of CASN-accredited programs who passed NCLEX, and foreign graduates with NCLEX and five years of unencumbered US practice, need no evaluation (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

English proficiency

A program taught in English, 60 college credits from an English-speaking school, or an approved English test (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

TruMerit or JS&A: who translates

Michigan's guide lists three evaluation products for registered nurses educated outside the United States or Canada: TruMerit's CES Professional Report, a certificate from TruMerit's Certification Program, or JS&A's Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials for Boards of Nursing, each sent directly to the Bureau of Professional Licensing (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

TruMerit wants nursing transcripts translated by the school you attended and translates them itself for a fee if the school cannot (TruMerit: CES Professional Report), so an outside translation does not fit its rule.

JS&A asks for professional, certified English translations alongside the records your school sends (JS&A: application for boards of nursing).

Its services page requires ATA-certified translators for outside translations made in the US (JS&A: services and translations), while its FAQ says most professional translations are acceptable, subject to review (JS&A: FAQ). An ATA-certified translator satisfies both.

LPNs have a wider choice, and the clock starts early

For practical nurses educated abroad, Michigan also accepts a full course-by-course evaluation certified by a NACES member, sent directly by the agency (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

NACES members such as WES accept certified translations from professional services (WES: translation requirements), so for an LPN file no ATA-certified translator is needed if you choose such an agency.

The evaluation date matters: an applicant who does not pass NCLEX within three years after obtaining the evaluation or certification cannot retest until a nursing program certifies skills competency or the Board grants an extension of up to six months (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

Order the translation and the evaluation when you are ready to sit for the exam.

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • Grades, hours and credits exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA or equivalency.

  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to Michigan Board of Nursing

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for Michigan Board of Nursing, what it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For Michigan that means we translate your nursing records for the evaluation agency; we do not order the TruMerit or JS&A report, and we cannot send transcripts on behalf of your school.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Michigan Board of Nursing accept certified translations?

A TruMerit CES Professional Report, a TruMerit Certification Program certificate, or a JS&A evaluation for boards of nursing (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs).

Can an LPN use WES?

Michigan accepts a full course-by-course evaluation by any NACES member for LPN applicants (Nursing licensing guide and FAQs); WES is a NACES member and accepts professional translations (WES: translation requirements).

Can I translate my nursing transcripts myself for TruMerit?

No. TruMerit wants them translated by the school, or by TruMerit for a fee (TruMerit: CES Professional Report).

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for JS&A?

Yes, on request. Ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for a JS&A evaluation for the Michigan Board of Nursing and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA.
