How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The Medical Board of California requires original, official certified English translations of non-English transcripts and academic documents, each with the translator's original signed declaration of fluency and accuracy under penalty of perjury, mailed directly to the Board with a copy of the original-language document.

The Medical Board of California accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary: its Form TRANS lists a commercial translation agency with business letterhead and an official seal or notary seal, and recommends, without requiring, an ATA-accredited translator, which eVerbary assigns on request.

Your medical school still submits the Certificate of Medical Education and official transcript itself.

Medical Board of California requirements in detail

Translation

Non-English international academic credentials need original, official certified translations; photocopies are not acceptable (Form TRANS).

Who may translate

Recommended: an ATA-accredited translator or a certified court interpreter.

Also considered: a commercial translation agency with business letterhead and official agency or notary seal, a US university foreign-language department chair, or a US consulate (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials).

Declaration

The translator who prepared the translation signs an original declaration of fluency in the language, certifying under penalty of perjury that it is complete and accurate; a signature on the translator's behalf is not accepted (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials).

Notarization

ATA translators and court interpreters sign before a notary, unless the translation comes from a known agency that affixes its own official seal (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials).

Original or copy

Each translation travels with a copy of the corresponding non-English document (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials, medical education).

How it arrives

Mailed directly to the Board by the translator or the medical school (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials). FCVS primary-source translations are also accepted (Physician's and Surgeon's license).

Restrictions

The translator may not be related to the applicant by blood, marriage or adoption, and translations without official letterhead are refused (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials).

Original, signed, mailed by the translator

The Board's Form TRANS is strict about form.

The translation must be an original, not a photocopy; it must be on letterhead; the person who translated it must sign a declaration of fluency and accuracy under penalty of perjury; and the translation, with a copy of the non-English document, must be mailed to the Board by the translator or the medical school (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials).

The medical education page repeats that the translator mails the original translation directly to the Board (P&S license: medical education).

eVerbary can mail the translation to the Medical Board of California in a sealed, signed envelope: choose the hard copy at checkout with the Board's address ($19.95 Priority or $37.95 Express in the US) and write in the order notes that it is for the Medical Board of California.

Because the Board wants the declaration signed by the translator who prepared the translation, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation must follow Form TRANS; we confirm the details before you pay.

The Board recommends, but does not require, a translator accredited by the American Translators Association or a certified court interpreter (Form TRANS: translation of international academic credentials).

It also lists a commercial translation agency with business letterhead and an official seal or notary seal as an authorized translator.

A certified translation from eVerbary fits the agency category; if you prefer the recommended route, eVerbary assigns a translator individually certified by ATA on request.

Where the Board's pages differ

The P&S and Postgraduate Training License pages list the "Official English Translation" among the documents the medical school must submit through DOCS or a third-party service (P&S license, PTL).

Form TRANS and the medical education page let the translator mail it directly instead and list agencies the Board will consider (Form TRANS, medical education).

Both routes end at the Board; if your school cannot translate, the translator route is the one the form describes.

Submitting the translation to Medical Board of California

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for Medical Board of California, what it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For California that means we translate and mail the translation; Form MED and the official transcript come from your medical school, and the ECFMG status report from ECFMG or FCVS.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
