How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The Alaska Board of Nursing requires every document not in English to be accompanied by a certified English translation, both in its RN exam application instructions and in its regulation for foreign-educated nurses (12 AAC 44.310).

Alaska accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary: the rule asks for a certified translation without saying who must make it.

Transcripts still come directly from your school, and a temporary permit for foreign graduates needs a CGFNS course-by-course report, which follows CGFNS rules and which we do not provide.

Alaska BON at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

Alaska's RN application says documents not in English must come with a certified English translation (application instructions), and 12 AAC 44.310 says the same for foreign-educated nurses (regulations), without naming who must translate, so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Alaska BON requirements in detail

Translation

Documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112; 12 AAC 44.310(a)).

Who may translate

Not specified: the board asks for a certified translation and does not say who must make it.

Original or copy

The official transcript is sent directly from the school, with the graduation date and degree on it; electronic transcripts go to BoardOfNursing@Alaska.Gov. The Nursing Program Verification form also comes from the school (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).

English proficiency

If your program was not taught in English: an English exam with reading, speaking, writing and listening; a CGFNS CES course-by-course report showing English instruction; or an ICHP VisaScreen certificate (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).

Evaluation

Not required for every applicant by the 2025 instructions; required for a temporary permit, where foreign graduates submit a CGFNS CES full education, course-by-course report (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).

Notarization

The application itself must be signed and notarized (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112); the board does not ask for a notarized translation.

Exam

Nurses educated outside the US take the NCLEX (12 AAC 44.310(b)).

What the translation covers in Alaska

Alaska's rule is broad: all required documents not in English, not only the transcript (Nursing statutes and regulations, September 2025).

For a foreign graduate that usually means the transcript your school sends, the Nursing Program Verification form if the school fills it in another language, and supporting records such as a license from the country of education.

The school sends the transcript straight to the board (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112); the translation has to accompany it, so ask the school for a copy of what it sends, or have it sent to you as well, so the translation matches it line by line.

A certified translation from us reproduces every page, stamps and handwritten notes included, with a signed certificate of accuracy. Marks and hours stay exactly as the school recorded them.

CGFNS: when Alaska asks for it

The 2025 RN exam instructions make a CGFNS course-by-course report one of three ways to show English proficiency, and require it only for a temporary permit (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).

An older board checklist (Rev. 07/2012) lists a certified copy of a CGFNS evaluation for every foreign graduate (checklist); the current instructions are the newer document, but confirm with the board if you are unsure.

If you do order a CGFNS report, CGFNS applies its own rule: nursing transcripts must be translated by the school or by TruMerit for a fee (TruMerit). Our translation is for the documents you send to the Alaska board.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service or a licensing agency: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, we cannot send documents on behalf of the school or authority that issued them, and we do not file the license application.

For Alaska that means we translate your records for the board; the transcript itself must come from your school, and a CGFNS report, if you need one, comes from CGFNS under its own translation rules.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Alaska Board of Nursing accept certified translations from a translation company?

Yes. Its rule asks for a certified English translation of documents not in English and does not limit who may make it (Nursing statutes and regulations, September 2025).

Do I need CGFNS to get licensed in Alaska?

Not necessarily for the license: the 2025 instructions list CGFNS as one of three ways to show English proficiency. It is required for a temporary permit if you graduated outside the US or Canada, except Quebec (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).

Can I send my transcript myself?

No. The official transcript must be sent directly from the school; electronic transcripts go to BoardOfNursing@Alaska.Gov (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).

Does the translation have to be notarized?

The board asks for a certified translation, not a notarized one (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112). Notarization can be added at checkout ($34.90 per order) if you want it.

Which English tests does Alaska accept?

An exam covering reading, speaking, writing and listening; the board does not accept the Online IELTS Indicator or the TOEFL at Home test (RN license by examination: application and instructions 08-4112).
