Reconocimiento, and the registry
Uruguayan acknowledgment may be made in the birth registration, before the Registro de Estado Civil later, by public instrument or in a will, and it is recorded against the birth entry.
A partida de nacimiento issued afterwards shows the father. We name the registry office and the instrument as printed.
Both surnames, required
Uruguay requires both surnames on identity documents, and since a 2013 reform the order may be agreed by the parents rather than following the paternal-first rule automatically.
So acknowledgment may add the paternal surname in first or second position depending on what was agreed, and the record states which. We reproduce the order as registered.
Judicial filiation, and the Code of Childhood
Where a father does not acknowledge, an action lies under the Code of Childhood and Adolescence, and Uruguayan law provides for biological evidence with inferences available from refusal.

The cédula, and the check digit
The cédula de identidad, seven digits plus a check digit after a hyphen, identifies each person and does not change with filiation.
