Reconnaissance, from the French code
Haitian filiation law descends from the French Civil Code and provides reconnaissance — acknowledgment — made before a notaire or an officier d'état civil, or in the birth declaration itself.
The vocabulary is nineteenth-century French and reads older than a US reader expects. That is period rather than error, and we translate the terms as written.
Enfant naturel, and the 1959 reform
Haitian documents may describe a child as enfant naturel — born outside marriage — which was a legal category with reduced rights, substantially reformed to equalise children.
The term is period terminology and we translate it as printed rather than modernising it, because a reader may be assessing a document by its own era.
The Archives Nationales
Civil status registers are deposited with the Archives Nationales, which issues the certified extrait that foreign offices require. An officer's own copy is not the same document.
For children never registered, the lawful substitute is an acte de notoriété, a court-attested declaration by witnesses, sometimes followed by a late registration. It is not an acknowledgment and we name it.
