Nasab follows the marriage
Syrian personal status law establishes nasab through a valid marriage, and for Muslims the Personal Status Law governs while Christian, Druze and Jewish communities apply their own.
There is no acknowledgment instrument of the civil-law kind. So a Syrian filiation case is generally about proving that a marriage existed, and the documents are the marriage record and court findings about it.
The unregistered marriage, and the confirmation
Many Syrian marriages, particularly during and after 2011, were contracted religiously without being registered, and a court confirmation of such a marriage is what regularises the children's lineage and allows registration.
