The vaccination card, and what conflict did to coverage
Syrian childhood immunisation was recorded on a card stamped at the health centre that gave each dose, under a programme that had very high coverage before 2011 and was severely disrupted afterwards.
So a Syrian card may be complete for an older child and sparse for a younger one in the same family. That reflects when and where they lived, and a US civil surgeon assesses what is missing. We reproduce exactly what is recorded.
Records created in displacement
A great many Syrian medical records in US files were created in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan or Egypt, at UNHCR-supported or NGO clinics, or by IOM during resettlement processing.
IOM resettlement health assessments follow standards a US civil surgeon recognises and frequently include a documented catch-up immunisation series. They are the most useful record in a Syrian file and applicants frequently have them.
Where the record sits, and what survives
Care in Syria runs through Ministry of Health facilities, university hospitals, the private sector and, in some areas, parallel administrations. Hospitals retain the chart and patients hold discharge summaries and laboratory reports.
Retrieval from inside Syria is frequently impossible for people who left. Where a client can only obtain a fragment we translate that, named for what it is.
Arabic, four names and legalisation
Syrian names run given name, father, grandfather and family name, so a shortened form on one document is not a change of name. Eastern Arabic numerals are given in Western digits and Hijri dates converted individually.
