Personal status follows religion
Syrian family law applies the personal status law of the parties' religion — the Personal Status Law for Muslims, with Christian, Druze and Jewish communities applying their own — and there is no civil marriage or civil separation.
So a Syrian divorce comes from a sharia court, a spiritual court of the relevant church, or a Druze court, and which one tells a reader which law applied. We name the court exactly.
Talaq, registration and the 2019 amendments
A talaq must be registered with the sharia court to be given effect in the civil register, and Syrian law has been amended more than once — notably in 2019 — changing custody ages, the conditions for polygamy and the requirements around registration.
