No separation that keeps the marriage
Sudanese Muslim family law does not provide a court-ordered separation that leaves the marriage in force, as US law does. A wife who cannot continue the marriage petitions for tatliq, judicial divorce, for example for harm (Article 162 of the 1991 Act), for non-payment of maintenance (Article 174) or for her husband's absence of a year or more (Article 185).
What US offices sometimes call a separation is often a revocable talaq during the waiting period, or court orders on maintenance and custody made while a divorce case is pending. We translate the document's own term, not "legal separation", so the office sees exactly what was ordered. See our Arabic page.
Which document you have
If a court ruled on a petition, the judgment states the ground and whether the divorce is final. Maintenance and custody orders are separate decisions with their own dates; each is translated in full, with any Hijri date kept beside the Gregorian one.
If the result was a divorce, see the Sudanese divorce page; for court use in the US, see court translations. Christian couples' cases follow different rules; ask the receiving office which document it needs.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a legal separation document from Sudan?
Not in the US sense under Muslim family law. You may hold a revocable divorce, a maintenance order or a judgment, and we translate whichever it is.
My document is a maintenance order.
We translate it as a maintenance order, with its date and amounts as written.
What does tatliq mean?
A divorce granted by the court on the wife's petition. We translate the term and keep the ground stated.
