Congolese law is built around divorce

The Congolese Family Code makes divorce a court decision on one ground, the irremediable breakdown of the marriage, and we could not confirm a separate legal-separation procedure in the current text. A long separation in fact may be cited in a divorce case as evidence that the marriage has broken down.

If you have been asked for a 'legal separation' document, what exists is usually one of three things: a judgment or order made while a divorce was pending, on where each spouse lives, custody and maintenance; a maintenance judgment on its own; or a written family agreement. We translate whichever you have and call it what it is.

Telling the receiving office what it is

A US court or agency should not be left to guess. The translation keeps the French title of the document, gives the court and case number, and adds a translator's note if the title could be confused with an American legal separation.

If the marriage was later dissolved, the judgment belongs on our Congolese divorce page; the marriage itself is on the marriage certificate page. See also our French page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a legal separation decree in the DRC?

We could not confirm one in the current Family Code, which centres on divorce. Ask a Congolese lawyer if you need to know your legal position; we translate the documents you have.

My court order covers custody and maintenance only.

We translate it as the order it is, with its exact title, and do not call it a separation decree.

Can a family agreement be translated?

Yes. It is translated as a private agreement, signatures and witnesses included.
