Which way the translation goes

Most South Africans in the US need a power of attorney for use at home — to sell a house, close an account, deal with an estate — and they sign it in English, which needs no translation. A document signed abroad for use in South Africa must be authenticated: Rule 63 of the Uniform Rules of Court sets out how, and from a country party to the Apostille Convention, such as the US, an apostille is accepted instead.

Translation into English is needed when a South African power of attorney (volmag) in Afrikaans has to be shown to a US court, bank or USCIS. We translate the whole instrument: the parties with their ID numbers, each power granted, the witnesses and any notary's certificate. See our Afrikaans page.

Powers of attorney for property

Transferring land in South Africa needs a specific power of attorney to pass transfer, drawn up by the conveyancer and lodged at the Deeds Office with the deed. A general power of attorney is not enough for that, so the conveyancer will usually send you the exact document to sign.

Older family powers of attorney used in property transfers are often in Afrikaans and sit in the Deeds Office file with the deed. See our title deed page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Does a POA I sign in the US need translating for South Africa?

Not if it is in English. It must still be authenticated or apostilled; check with the South African conveyancer or attorney who will use it.

My POA is in Afrikaans. Who in the US needs a translation?

Any US court, bank or agency that relies on it. We translate it in full, with the signatures, witnesses and certificates.

Can I use a general power of attorney to sell my house?

Usually not. The Deeds Office expects a specific power of attorney to pass transfer, which the conveyancer prepares.
