Migraciones issues it, RENIEC holds the record
Peruvian passports are issued by the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones and the biodata page carries the DNI number, which RENIEC assigns and which does not change with a change of name.
Two bodies, and the DNI is the link between them. We reproduce the eight-digit number exactly, including the verification digit that Peruvian documents print after it.
The DNI shows what the passport does not
The Peruvian DNI prints marital status and, in the current version, disability status, and children hold one from birth showing their parents' names.
So for a family relationship or a change of civil status, the DNI is frequently the more informative document and it is the one people do not send. We translate both consistently where you send them together.
Two surnames, and indigenous names
Peruvians carry paternal then maternal surnames and the passport prints both. Indigenous surnames from Quechua and Aymara appear with spellings that registry clerks have historically hispanicised, so one family may appear under two spellings.
