Issued in Asmara, wherever you applied
Eritrean passports are issued by the Department of Immigration and Nationality and produced in Asmara, whether the application was made in Eritrea or at an embassy. Passports issued before 1 May 2010 were not machine-readable and became invalid in 2015. Inside Eritrea a passport generally requires proof of release or exemption from national service; embassies abroad often ask for proof of the 2% diaspora tax and, from people who did not complete national service, a signed form of repentance.
The data page is in English and often needs no translation. What does is anything in Tigrinya or Arabic: cover, endorsements, stamps and visas. A passport obtained in Eritrea usually has an Eritrean exit visa as its first entry; one obtained through the embassy in Sudan often starts with a Sudanese exit visa marked "for departure only". We look at the passport before quoting.
The surname field changed in 2020
Eritreans have no family surnames. Until 2020 the passport did not separate first name and surname; since 17 August 2020 the grandfather's name is printed as the surname and the given name and father's name together as the first name. Two passports of the same person can therefore divide the same names differently, and neither is wrong.
Romanised spellings also vary, as with Berhane, Birhane and Brhane, or Weldemariam and Woldemariam. Our translations of your other documents follow your current passport and keep each original's name order. See the Eritrean identity card and birth certificate pages and our Tigrinya page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My old and new passports split my names differently.
Since August 2020 the grandfather's name is printed as the surname. We translate each passport as printed and can add a note on the change.
Does my passport need translating at all?
Usually only the stamps, visas and endorsements in Tigrinya or Arabic. If an office wants only the English data page, ask whether it needs a translation.
My children are entered in my passport.
Children up to 16 can be included in a parent's Eritrean passport. We translate that page as well.
