The Federal Police issue it, and the CPF is on it
Brazilian passports are issued by the Polícia Federal, which surprises readers who expect a foreign ministry. The biodata page carries the CPF — the taxpayer number that survives every change of name and is the single most useful identifier in a Brazilian packet.
The passport also shows the filiação, the parents' names, which most passports do not. That makes a Brazilian passport unusually useful for establishing a family relationship on its own.
Several surnames, and none of them fixed
Brazilian naming commonly runs to three or four surnames drawn from both parents' lines, and Brazilian law allows a good deal of latitude in which are used. A person may carry a different combination on documents of different ages.
A US form that captures only the last one loses the rest, and a reader comparing documents sees a mismatch. We reproduce the full name as printed and say what changed where the documents show a registered change.
The nome social field
Brazil records a nome social — a chosen name used by transgender people — on several official documents, and since 2018 name and gender marker can be altered directly at the cartório.
A passport issued after such an alteration may show no trace of the former name at all, which is what the rules require and is not a gap. We translate what the document shows and do not infer what it omits.
The certidão behind it
Brazilian civil records carry a 32-digit matrícula encoding the cartório, book, page and entry, and the certidão de nascimento issued with its averbações is what carries any change of name.
