Certificado de conclusão and histórico escolar
Brazilian ensino médio is three years (1st to 3rd ano) after nine years of ensino fundamental. The school issues two documents: the certificado de conclusão do ensino médio, which states that the student finished, and the histórico escolar, which lists every subject with its workload in hours (carga horária) and grades for each year. Most US institutions want both.
Adults who finished by exam hold a certificate based on the Encceja or, between 2009 and 2016, on ENEM results; it is translated as the certificate it is. Brazil has no single school grading scale: 0 to 10 is common, with the pass set by the state or school, and some records use concepts such as A to E or Ótimo, Bom and Regular. Grades are translated as printed with any key on the document; converting them is a credential evaluator's work.
Apostille from the cartório, and US uses
Since Brazil joined the Apostille Convention in 2016, apostilles are issued by notary offices (cartórios), and many school documents carry one; it is translated with the certificate. Registration data, stamps and signatures on the back of the histórico are translated too.
In the US these documents are used for school placement (see school enrollment translations), community college and adult education admission, employers, and evaluation before university — see the Brazilian transcript page. Names follow the passport and the birth certificate. See our Portuguese page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the histórico escolar or the certificado?
Usually both. The certificado proves completion; the histórico shows subjects, hours and grades.
I finished through Encceja.
Then your certificate is the Encceja-based one. We translate it in full, with any grades and notes it carries.
Is the cartório apostille translated?
Yes. It is part of the document you submit.
