How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

Texas DPS says a foreign license not in English or Spanish must be translated by a translation service or your consulate, and that a foreign marriage license or divorce decree not in English needs a certified English translation, without limiting who makes it.

A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets both. We translate the documents; DPS still decides on identity, lawful presence and testing.

Five reciprocity countries

France, Germany, South Korea, UAE and Taiwan skip the tests.

Texas DPS requirements in detail

Translation

A foreign license not in English or Spanish must be translated before you arrive in Texas; a foreign marriage license not in English needs a certified English translation (Moving to Texas: a guide to driver licenses and IDs).

Who may translate

For a foreign license, a translation service or your consulate (Moving to Texas: a guide to driver licenses and IDs). For marriage licenses and divorce decrees, DPS asks for a certified translation without naming who makes it (identification requirements).

Original or copy

Identity and name-change documents must be originals or certified copies; certified documents should not be laminated, and photocopies are refused (Identification requirements).

Name change

If you use a name other than the one on your birth certificate, bring the marriage license, divorce decree, court order or amended birth certificate that links the names (Identification requirements).

Foreign license, visitors

A valid foreign license may be used to drive in Texas for up to one year or until you become a resident, whichever comes first (Driving privilege reciprocity).

Foreign license, new residents

Apply for a Texas license within 90 days of becoming a resident. Holders of a license from France, Germany, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates or Taiwan may have the knowledge and skills exams waived (Driving privilege reciprocity, moving guide).

Tests

The knowledge test is given only in English or Spanish; you may bring a translator, but only to communicate before and after the test (Testing in other languages).

Two documents, two wordings

DPS's guide for people moving to Texas has a short translation section with two rules. A foreign license that is not in English or Spanish must be translated by a translation service or your consulate before you arrive.

A foreign marriage license that is not in English must come with a certified English translation.

Spanish is accepted for the license but not named for the marriage license, so a Spanish marriage certificate still needs the translation.

The identification requirements page repeats the second rule for its list of supporting documents: an original or certified copy of a marriage license or divorce decree, with a certified translation if not in English.

The teen learner checklist, form DL-67, says the same for a marriage certificate or divorce decree from a foreign jurisdiction.

Where foreign records fit in the identity rules

DPS verifies identity with one primary document, two secondary documents, or one secondary and two supporting documents, and every name and date of birth must match.

A valid foreign passport with a visa and I-94 is a primary document; a valid foreign passport alone is only a supporting one (Identification requirements).

A foreign marriage record or divorce decree has two uses: as a supporting identity document, and as the link between your birth name and the name you now use. Both uses need the certified translation.

Most other supporting documents marked with an asterisk must come from a US state, territory, the District of Columbia or a Canadian province, so foreign school records or foreign government IDs do not count (Identification requirements).

Documents people usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to Texas DPS

  • Bring the original or certified copy of each foreign document with its translation to a driver license office when you apply; DPS does not accept photocopies (Identification requirements).

  • If you drive in Texas as a visitor, carry the foreign license with its English translation; the international agreements DPS lists require the license to be translated into English (Driving privilege reciprocity).

What we do not do

eVerbary translates documents; it is not the DMV and does not issue licenses, International Driving Permits or REAL ID decisions. For Texas DPS that means we translate and certify your documents; we do not provide consulate translations, International Driving Permits or proof of lawful presence.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Texas DPS accept a translation from a translation company?

Yes. For a foreign license, DPS names a translation service or your consulate, and for marriage licenses and divorce decrees it asks for a certified translation without saying who makes it (Moving to Texas: a guide to driver licenses and IDs, Identification requirements).

Does my Spanish license need a translation?

No. DPS asks for a translation only when the foreign license is not in English or Spanish (Moving to Texas: a guide to driver licenses and IDs).

Does my Spanish marriage certificate need a translation?

Yes. The rule for marriage licenses covers any document not in English (Moving to Texas: a guide to driver licenses and IDs).

How long can I drive in Texas on my foreign license?

Up to one year, or until you become a Texas resident, whichever comes first; residents then have 90 days to get a Texas license (Driving privilege reciprocity).

Can I take the written test in my language?

Only in English or Spanish. A translator may help you communicate with the specialist before and after the test, not during it (Testing in other languages).
