How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

The Louisiana OMV's identification policy accepts a foreign driver's license as a secondary document when it comes with immigration documents and a translation if it is not in English, without saying who must translate.

A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that rule.

For Taiwan licenses the OMV asks for a notarized translation authenticated by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston or made by a translator acceptable to the OMV, so add notarization and confirm with the office first.

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

OMV Policy 6.00 lists a foreign driver's license "accompanied by proper immigration documents and translation, if not in English" (OMV Policy 6.00, Identification Requirements), with no rule on who translates, so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Worth knowing about Louisiana OMV

Translation with the license

A foreign license counts as secondary ID only when translated.

Five reciprocity countries

Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan, South Korea and, since August 2026, Ireland.

No visitors

Visitors to the US cannot get a Louisiana license or ID.

Louisiana OMV requirements in detail

Translation

A foreign driver's license is accepted as a secondary identification document with proper immigration documents and a translation, if it is not in English (Policy 6.00).

Who may translate

Policy 6.00 does not say (OMV Policy 6.00, Identification Requirements). For Taiwan licenses: a notarized translation authenticated by TECO in Houston or provided by a translator acceptable to the OMV (License transfers).

Reciprocity

First-time applicants from Germany, Switzerland, South Korea and Taiwan are exempt from driver education and the knowledge and road tests, and take the vision test (License transfers).

Policy 18.01, revised August 1, 2026, adds the Republic of Ireland and, for H-2A workers, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and South Africa (OMV Policy 18.01, Reciprocity with Other Countries).

Other foreign licenses

First-time applicants must get an instructional permit, show proof of driver education and pass the knowledge, vision and road tests (License transfers, Policy 6.02).

Who can apply

Immigration documents are verified before issuance, and visitors to the United States are not eligible for a Louisiana license or ID (License transfers).

Keeping the foreign license

Under a reciprocity agreement you keep the foreign license, and any International Driver's License, valid for as long as the Louisiana license is valid (OMV Policy 18.01, Reciprocity with Other Countries).

Marriage and divorce documents

Policy 6.00 lists marriage certificates and divorces recorded in the US (OMV Policy 6.00, Identification Requirements); it does not address foreign ones.

The license, the translation and the immigration papers go together

Louisiana treats a foreign driver's license as a secondary identification document, and only together with proper immigration documents and, if it is not in English, a translation (OMV Policy 6.00, Identification Requirements).

The OMV verifies immigration status before it issues a license or ID card, and visitors to the United States are not eligible at all (License transfers).

Even under a reciprocity agreement, the OMV can request a translation of the foreign license if necessary (OMV Policy 18.01, Reciprocity with Other Countries). Having it ready avoids a second trip.

Reciprocity: who skips the tests

The License Transfers page lists Germany, Switzerland, South Korea and Taiwan: first-time applicants from those countries skip driver education and the knowledge and road tests but must pass the vision test (License transfers).

OMV Policy 18.01, revised on August 1, 2026, adds the Republic of Ireland, and for holders of H-2A status, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and South Africa (OMV Policy 18.01, Reciprocity with Other Countries).

Everyone else starts with an instructional permit and driver education; H-2A workers with a valid foreign license are exempt from the education courses but still test (OMV Policy 6.02, Immigrant and Non-Immigrant Issuance).

Taiwan licenses: a stricter note

For Taiwan, both the License Transfers page and Policy 18.01 say notarized translations must be authenticated by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston or provided by a translator acceptable to the Office of Motor Vehicles (License transfers, Policy 18.01).

The OMV does not publish who it finds acceptable.

If you hold a Taiwan license, order the translation with notarization and ask your OMV office whether it accepts a professional translator before you rely on it; otherwise TECO in Houston is the safe route.

Documents people usually translate

  • Foreign driver's licenses, front and back

  • Spanish-language licenses from the H-2A reciprocity countries (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama)

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload or print.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
  • Notarization added at checkout ($34.90 per order) when the office asks for a notarized translation.

Submitting the translation to Louisiana OMV

  • You present the foreign license, its translation and your immigration documents together at an OMV office; the OMV verifies your status before issuing anything (License transfers, OMV Policy 6.00, Identification Requirements).

  • Bring the translation printed with our signed certificate; for a Taiwan license, choose notarization at checkout ($34.90 per order).

What we do not do

eVerbary translates documents; it is not the DMV and does not issue licenses, International Driving Permits or REAL ID decisions. For the Louisiana OMV that means we translate the license and documents; TECO authentication and the driver education certificate come from those offices and schools.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and submit it with the copy of the original wherever the office asks for it.
