How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026
The University of Montana publishes no translation rule of its own: every undergraduate applicant with secondary or university records from outside the US needs an official International Credential Evaluation Report from TEC, ECE, WES or another active NACES member before UM makes an admission, scholarship or transfer credit decision.
UM's evaluation agencies, such as WES and ECE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
You order the translation first and send it to the agency; the agency writes the evaluation, which we do not provide.
UM at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
UM requires an evaluation from TEC, ECE, WES or any active NACES member (academic records), and WES accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES translation rules); ECE accepts one as well, while TEC asks for a translator certified by ATA. UM requirements in detail
Translation
UM states no translation rule; records from abroad reach it through an evaluation. The translation is what the agency needs before it can evaluate a document not in English.
Who may translate
Set by the evaluation agency (see below).
Evaluation
An official International Credential Evaluation Report of diplomas, transcripts, mark sheets and exam results from outside the US, from TEC, ECE, WES or any active NACES member (University of Montana: international academic records).
Report type
First-year: TEC course analysis, WES ICAP document-by-document or ECE general with GPA. Transfer and post-baccalaureate: TEC course analysis, WES ICAP or ECE course-by-course (University of Montana: international academic records).
Transfer
12 or more college credits after high school makes you a transfer student, with an evaluation for each college attended and no high school records (University of Montana: how to apply (international)).
Delivery
The agency sends the report electronically to UM; no personal copies, and no fee waivers for evaluations (University of Montana: international academic records; apply).
What each evaluation agency asks for the translation
UM names three agencies and accepts any active NACES member (academic records). WES wants a word-for-word translation by a professional translator or service and not the applicant, and does not translate itself.
ECE accepts complete, literal translations in the original's format, lets applicants translate themselves, and sells an $85 Translation Waiver; UM's ECE link gives 10% off.
The Evaluation Company, also 10% off through UM's link, asks for an outside translator certified by the American Translators Association, or translates through its own team. For TEC, eVerbary can assign an ATA-certified translator through a free quote, for the languages ATA certifies.
Order the right report
UM's chart matches each agency to a report: first-year applicants order a TEC course analysis, a WES document-by-document ICAP or an ECE general report with GPA; transfer and post-baccalaureate applicants a TEC course analysis, a WES ICAP or an ECE course-by-course (University of Montana: international academic records).
Transfer credit is awarded from the evaluation, so the report must list credits and grades. UM students who study abroad on programs not affiliated with UM need the same kind of evaluation for that coursework.

What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UM
Send official documents to the agency as its country guidelines say, with the translation, and add the University of Montana as an electronic recipient; the report goes straight to UM (University of Montana: international academic records).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For UM that means we translate your records for the agency; the ICER is ordered and paid by you, with no waivers.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the University of Montana require a certified translation?
UM itself publishes no translation rule; it requires an evaluation from TEC, ECE, WES or a NACES member (University of Montana: international academic records), and the agency sets the translation rule.
Which evaluation does UM want for a first-year applicant?
A TEC course analysis, a WES ICAP document-by-document report or an ECE general report with GPA (University of Montana: international academic records).
Can I use an eVerbary translation with TEC?
TEC asks for an outside translator certified by ATA (TEC). eVerbary can provide one through a free quote, for Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) or Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page).
Am I a transfer applicant?
Yes, if you completed 12 or more college-level credits after high school (University of Montana: how to apply (international)).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
