How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026
The University of Houston-Clear Lake asks international freshmen for secondary records in the original language with a certified literal English translation, which may come from the school, the Ministry of Education, an embassy, EducationUSA or a certified translation service.
University of Houston-Clear Lake accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
For transfer and graduate applicants the rule is stricter: UHCL accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary when the translator is individually certified by ATA, which eVerbary provides on request.

Worth knowing about UHCL
Two rules
Freshmen: translation service. Graduate and transfer: ATA.
Every attempt
Failed marks too; no consolidated mark sheets.
No evaluation needed
For a NACES translation, do not buy an evaluation.
UHCL requirements in detail
Translation (freshmen)
Records not in English in the original language plus a certified literal English translation (Freshman: required secondary academic records).
Who may translate (freshmen)
The issuing school, Ministry of Education, consulate or embassy, EducationUSA, or a certified translation service (Freshman: required secondary academic records).
Translation (transfer, graduate)
Word-for-word, only from the college or university, consulate- or embassy-approved translators, an approved evaluation provider, or a translator certified by ATA (How to apply: international graduate, transfer).
Evaluation
Transfers with university courses abroad: course-by-course from NACES, SDR or ECE. Graduate, College of Science and Engineering: optional NACES evaluation with GPA and US equivalency (How to apply: international transfer, How to apply: international graduate).
Mark sheets
Must show dates of attendance, subjects and every mark, failed attempts included; consolidated mark sheets are not accepted (How to apply: international graduate).
Copies
Freshmen may upload copies of official transcripts to complete the application; final official records are required later. Copies attested by professors or notaries are not accepted (Freshman: required secondary academic records, How to apply: international graduate).
Freshmen and graduate applicants follow different translation rules
For a freshman file, UHCL lists five acceptable sources for the certified literal translation of years 9 to 12, and a certified translation service is one of them (Freshman: required secondary academic records).
For transfers and graduate applicants, the list changes: word-for-word translations only from the issuing institution, embassy-approved translators, an approved evaluation provider or a certified translator recognized by ATA (How to apply: international graduate).
Its graduate FAQ says the same and adds that if you use a NACES member, you buy only the translation, not an evaluation.
For a transfer or graduate file, ask eVerbary for a free quote and say the translation is for UHCL graduate or transfer admission: we assign a translator individually certified by ATA for the languages ATA certifies.
What the mark sheets must show
UHCL reads every attempt.
Transcripts and mark sheets must show dates of attendance, subjects and all marks, including failed attempts, and consolidated mark sheets are not considered official transcripts (How to apply: international graduate).
Its FAQ gives Mexico as an example of a system where applicants submit the native-language transcript plus an official word-for-word translation.
Translate each semester's mark sheet and the degree certificate, and contact oias@uhcl.edu if you are unsure which documents your country's system needs.
Transfers who took university courses abroad also submit a course-by-course evaluation from NACES, SDR or ECE, with a discount through UHCL's ECE link (How to apply: international transfer).
Need a certified translation for UHCL?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts, mark sheets and diploma, years 9-12
- National or external exam results
- University mark sheets for every semester, all attempts
- Degree certificate or provisional certificate
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UHCL
Freshmen upload the records with their certified translation to complete the application, and send official final records later (Freshman: required secondary academic records).
Transfer and graduate applicants submit the original-language documents with the word-for-word translations before the final evaluation of the file (How to apply: international graduate).
We can send the translation directly to the admissions office by email on request.
If you need a translator certified by ATA
Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:
$34.95 per page
Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian
$44.95 per page
Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian
To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for UHCL, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).
We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.
For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For UHCL that means we translate your records; a course-by-course evaluation, required for transfers with university work abroad, comes from NACES, SDR or ECE.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a translation service for my freshman application to UHCL?
Yes. UHCL accepts a certified literal translation from a certified translation service (Freshman: required secondary academic records).
Who may translate my university records for UHCL graduate admission?
The issuing institution, embassy-approved translators, an approved evaluation provider or an ATA-certified translator (How to apply: international graduate).
Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for UHCL?
Yes, on request through a free quote: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian at $34.95 per page, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian at $44.95. ATA certifies no other languages into English.
Are consolidated mark sheets accepted?
No. UHCL wants every mark, failed attempts included (How to apply: international graduate).
Do graduate applicants need an evaluation?
Optional for College of Science and Engineering programs; if you use a NACES member only to translate, do not purchase an evaluation (How to apply: international graduate).
