How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026
Southern Maine Community College asks international students for a copy of their high school transcript, diploma, HiSET or GED, and says the document must be translated into English to be processed; it does not say who must translate.
Southern Maine Community College accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. College transcripts from abroad count for credit only after an evaluation by a NACES member, which we do not provide.
SMCC at a glance
Does it accept eVerbary? Yes
SMCC's international page says the high school document "must be translated into English to be processed" and does not restrict who translates (international students); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. SMCC requirements in detail
Translation
A copy of your high school transcript, diploma, HiSET or GED, translated into English to be processed (International students).
Who may translate
Not stated (International students).
College transcripts
Optional; if submitted for credit, evaluated by a NACES member (International students).
Transfer credit
Credentials from a college outside the US evaluated by a NACES member; SMCC then reviews them with the academic department (transfer).
Translate before you send it
SMCC accepts a copy of your high school transcript or diploma, or a HiSET or GED, but it will not process a document that is not in English (International students). Send the copy and its certified translation together, so the file moves on the first review.
College credit from abroad
College transcripts are optional for international admission.
If you want credit, the transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES member (International students); after that, you fill in a Transcript Review Form, and Admissions and the academic department review the transcripts and email you what transferred (Transfer to SMCC). The NACES agency needs your translated transcript before it starts.
Need a certified translation for SMCC?
$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.
Documents applicants usually translate
- High school diploma or completion certificate
- High school transcripts
- College transcripts, for a NACES evaluation
- Bank letters for the I-20, if not in English
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to SMCC
Upload or send the copy of your high school document and its translation to SMCC Admissions with your application (International students). For credit, the NACES agency sends its evaluation and you submit the Transcript Review Form (Transfer to SMCC).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For SMCC that means we translate your high school and college records; the NACES evaluation for transfer credit comes from an evaluation agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does SMCC need my high school diploma translated?
Yes. It must be translated into English to be processed (International students).
Can I send a copy instead of the original?
Yes. SMCC asks for a copy of the transcript, diploma, HiSET or GED (International students).
Do I need a credential evaluation?
Only for credit from a college outside the US, from a NACES member (Transfer to SMCC).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
