How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026

SVA requires transcript documents issued in English or accompanied by an official translation, and graduate applicants' translations must be complete, literal, word-for-word and in the same format as the original; it does not say who must translate.

School of Visual Arts accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

SVA also wants international records converted to US equivalencies by ECE, The Evaluation Company or WES, which we do not do; for The Evaluation Company, SVA accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary when the translator is individually certified by ATA, which eVerbary provides on request.

SVA at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

SVA asks for transcripts "accompanied by an official translation" and does not restrict who translates (undergraduate requirements); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation.

The Evaluation Company, one of SVA's evaluators, asks for an ATA-certified translator (TEC). Policy checked on October 27, 2026.

Worth knowing about SVA

WES: college only

High school evaluations from WES not accepted.

Same format, literal

Graduate translation rule.

China and Korea

National-scale high school records often need no evaluation.

SVA requirements in detail

Translation

Transcript documents must be issued in English or accompanied by an official translation (Undergraduate application requirements); graduate translations must be complete, literal, word-for-word and in the original's format (graduate FAQ).

Who may translate

Not stated.

Evaluation

International records converted into US equivalencies by ECE, The Evaluation Company (formerly SpanTran) or WES, course by course, with SVA as recipient (Undergraduate application requirements).

High school vs college

ECE for secondary and college transcripts; WES for college only, as SVA does not accept WES high school evaluations (undergraduate FAQ).

Exemptions

High school transcripts on Chinese and Korean national grading scales often need no external evaluation (Undergraduate application requirements).

Originals

Original, attested or certified true copies of all records from the first year of secondary school, in addition to the evaluation (Undergraduate FAQ).

Timing

Start at least eight weeks before deadlines; evaluations can take six weeks. Graduate materials are due by the January 15 priority deadline (Undergraduate application requirements, Graduate admissions FAQ).

What SVA wants the course-by-course report to show

SVA lists the contents it expects: the institution and its country, length of study, US equivalent, courses per year, each grade converted to A to F, total credits, course hours converted to semester hours, a cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale and the US degree equivalent (Undergraduate application requirements).

The evaluator can only build that from a complete translation, so every course name, mark and final exam result on the original must appear in the English version.

The agency depends on the record. ECE covers both high school and college; WES is accepted for college and university transcripts only (Undergraduate FAQ).

Where SVA's pages differ

The undergraduate requirements page says SVA requires an evaluation from ECE, The Evaluation Company or WES (Undergraduate application requirements); the undergraduate FAQ says it strongly recommends ECE and WES and does not name The Evaluation Company (Undergraduate FAQ).

If you plan to use TEC for an undergraduate application, confirm with Admissions first.

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

ECE accepts any complete, literal translation in the same format, including your own, and sells an $85 translation waiver (ECE). WES requires a word-for-word translation by a professional translator or translation service (WES).

The Evaluation Company accepts outside translations only from a translator certified by ATA (TEC); for TEC, ask eVerbary for a free quote. A certified eVerbary translation can go to SVA and to ECE or WES unchanged.

Graduate applicants

Graduate applicants with degrees from outside the US must show a background equivalent to a US bachelor's.

SVA wants official transcripts, never screenshots or emailed PDFs, an official translation that is complete, literal, word-for-word and in the same format, and a course-by-course evaluation from The Evaluation Company, WES or ECE, all by the January 15 priority deadline (Graduate admissions FAQ).

Need a certified translation for SVA?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • Secondary school transcripts from the first year onward
  • National exam results and leaving certificates
  • College or university transcripts
  • Bachelor's degree certificate, for graduate applicants

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to SVA

  • Official records go to SVA Undergraduate Admissions, 209 East 23rd Street, New York, NY 10010, in sealed envelopes, with their translations; the evaluation agency sends its report with SVA listed as the recipient (Undergraduate application requirements).

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for SVA, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For SVA that means we translate your records; the ECE, TEC or WES course-by-course evaluation is ordered and paid by you after the translation.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of translation does SVA accept?

An official translation; graduate translations must be complete, literal and in the original's format. SVA does not say who must translate (Undergraduate application requirements, Graduate admissions FAQ).

Can I use WES for my high school transcript?

No. SVA does not accept WES high school evaluations; use ECE for secondary records (Undergraduate FAQ).

Do Chinese or Korean high school transcripts need an evaluation?

Often not, if they follow the national grading scale; Admissions contacts you if it cannot evaluate them (Undergraduate application requirements).

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for The Evaluation Company?

Yes: ask for a free quote and say it is for TEC. ATA certifies Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) and Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page) into English, and no other languages (TEC rule).

How early should I start?

At least eight weeks before the deadline; evaluations can take up to six weeks (Undergraduate application requirements).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
