How we know · policy checked on October 27, 2026
Samuel Merritt University publishes no translation rule of its own: all international academic transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES member for degree, course content, semester unit equivalencies and science and cumulative GPAs before the application deadline.
Samuel Merritt's evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE and IERF, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.
You translate first and send the translation to the agency; the evaluation is something we do not provide.

Samuel Merritt requirements in detail
Translation
No rule of its own; the translation is what the NACES agency needs before it can evaluate a record not in English.
Who may translate
Set by the agency. WES, ECE and IERF accept a professional translation.
Evaluation
By a NACES member, covering degree, course content, semester units, and science and cumulative GPAs, before the deadline (International applicants).
Nurses educated abroad
Courses required by the California Board of Registered Nursing: application plus a copy of the BRN letter; non-matriculated, no financial aid (International applicants).
Tests
TOEFL for international medical graduates in the PA, DPT and OTD programs; MCAT for the podiatric medicine program (International applicants).
Visas
Up to three months; observe program deadlines (International applicants).
An evaluation built for health programs
Samuel Merritt's international applicants page asks that all international academic transcripts be evaluated by a NACES member before the application deadline, and spells out what the report must show: the degree, the course content, semester unit equivalencies, and both science and cumulative GPAs.
Ask the agency for a course-by-course report with a science GPA; a general report will not cover it.
SMU also strongly encourages international graduate and doctoral applicants to complete a semester of coursework at a US college first.
Internationally educated nurses who need courses to qualify for the NCLEX apply with the paper application and a copy of their California Board of Registered Nursing letter, then complete a background check, drug screen, BLS certification and health forms before clinicals (International applicants).
What each evaluation agency asks for the translation
WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator and does not accept translations by applicants.
ECE accepts complete, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original, or sells an $85 waiver under which it translates internally for the report.
IERF asks for typed, line-by-line, word-for-word translations and may require a professional one. Include syllabi or course descriptions if the agency asks for them to classify science courses.

What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Samuel Merritt
The translation goes to the NACES agency with your records; the agency sends the evaluation for your Samuel Merritt application before the program deadline (International applicants).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.
For Samuel Merritt that means we translate your records for the agency; the NACES evaluation is ordered by you.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Samuel Merritt require a credential evaluation?
Yes. All international transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES member before the deadline (International applicants).
What must the evaluation include?
Degree, course content, semester units, and science and cumulative GPAs (International applicants).
Can I use an eVerbary translation for WES?
Yes. WES accepts translations by a professional translator, not by applicants (WES).
I am a nurse educated abroad. How do I start?
Apply with a copy of your California BRN letter for the courses it requires (International applicants).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
