New York University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

New York University requires an English translation of every academic record not issued in English, but each school writes its own rule. Undergraduate Admissions accepts official translations only from a school official or from a translation agency accredited in the country where your school is located; eVerbary is a US company, not an agency accredited in that country, so an eVerbary translation does not match the undergraduate wording, while it does fit graduate programs that accept certified or professional translators, such as Tisch, Wagner and Tandon online; GSAS and Steinhardt ask for a certified translation without saying who must make it. We translate only: the ECE authentication NYU orders for admitted undergraduates and the course-by-course evaluation Steinhardt requires come from those agencies.

What NYU asks for
Translation (undergraduate)Unofficial uploads need an English translation; official documents need an official English translation (IQ Tool).
Who may translate (undergraduate)A school official, or a translation agency accredited in the country of the school that issued the record (source). The same rule covers transfer applicants, who also send all college transcripts.
Final documents (undergraduate)After admission, final transcripts and proof of graduation from schools outside the US go to Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) for authentication; NYU opens the account and pays, and you sign a consent form (proof of graduation). IB results sent by the IBO and some Cambridge A-Levels are exempt.
GSAS (arts and science graduate)Certified English translations that are literal and complete, uploaded with the original-language transcript; a WES report is not required (source).
Other graduate schoolsTisch: any certified translator (source). Steinhardt: certified or notarized translation plus a course-by-course evaluation (source). Tandon online: literal, line-by-line, on letterhead (source). Wagner: the school or a translating service (source).
Copies or originalsUndergraduate review runs on unofficial uploads; admitted students send official versions after accepting the offer (FAQ). GSAS wants a scan of a registrar-issued document, and official transcripts by mail once you enroll (source).
TimingECE deadlines: July 15 for fall, January 5 for spring transfers; the consent form link arrives in May and ECE verification takes about one to two weeks (source).
Does it accept eVerbary? It depends on the school. Undergraduate and transfer: no. NYU's International Qualifications Tool names only a school official or a translation agency accredited in the country of your school (IQ Tool); eVerbary is a US company, not an agency accredited in another country, so ask Undergraduate Admissions or use a translator accredited in your school's country. Graduate: Tisch accepts any certified translator, wherever based (Tisch), Wagner a certified translation through a translating service (Wagner) and Tandon online a professional, certified or accredited agency (Tandon); GSAS asks for certified, literal translations and Steinhardt for certified or notarized ones without saying who makes them (GSAS, Steinhardt). A certified translation from eVerbary fits those graduate programs. Policy checked on October 12, 2026.

Undergraduate: an agency accredited in your school's country

NYU's undergraduate rule is narrower than "a certified translator". The International Qualifications Tool says an official translation must be issued by a school official or by a translation agency accredited in the country where your school is located. eVerbary is a US company with translators in the US, so a translation from us does not match that wording. For official undergraduate documents, ask your school to issue the translation, use an agency accredited in your school's country, or ask Undergraduate Admissions whether it will accept anything else. For the unofficial uploads used during review, the tool asks only for an English translation.

Admission brings a second step. Final transcripts and proof of graduation from any school outside the US, American-curriculum schools and US-accredited schools abroad included, go straight from your school to ECE by July 15 (policy). NYU creates the ECE account and covers the cost; a parent signs the consent form if you are under 18. ECE forwards paper originals to NYU, where you can collect them on campus; NYU destroys those left uncollected (source).

GSAS and Steinhardt: certified, with or without an evaluation

The Graduate School of Arts & Science wants certified English translations that are literal and complete, together with the transcript in its original language (source). Its advisors evaluate foreign transcripts themselves and work out the US-equivalent GPA, so leave the GPA field blank if you studied outside the US; a WES report is optional. Graduates of three-year degrees from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar or Bangladesh must show four years of study.

Steinhardt accepts a certified or notarized translation, uploaded with the original-language transcript, and also requires a course-by-course evaluation for any degree from outside the US or Canada: WES (preferred, and strongly encouraged for Indian and three-year degrees), ECE or TEC. WES Basic is accepted, but transferring credit needs WES ICAP (source). Upload a copy of the official transcript, not a student-portal printout, and do not also mail it.

Tisch, Tandon online and Wagner: who translates, and how it arrives

Tisch's final transcript guidelines accept the issuing school, any certified translator (not necessarily US-based) or a NACES member's translation-only service, and refuse translations by you or a friend or relative who is not a certified translator (source). Tisch wants the original and the translation to reach it directly from the translator, not from you; ask Tisch graduate admissions how it wants a translation service to send them. If your transcript does not name the degree, add a degree certificate or diploma supplement from your school.

Tandon's online programs set format rules: complete and literal, word-for-word and line-by-line, laid out like the original, on the letterhead of the school, a US or home-country consulate, or a professional, certified or accredited agency, signed or stamped by the translator; applicants and family members may not translate (source). Wagner asks for the school's translation, or else a certified one through a translating service, and lets a NACES evaluation sent by the agency stand as the official transcript (source). The Stern School of Business was not covered in our review; check its pages directly.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to NYU

Undergraduates upload unofficial documents in the NYU applicant portal under "Upload Materials"; official documents arrive through the Common App recommenders portal, by email from a school official to admissions.docs@nyu.edu, or by post (IQ Tool). After admission, your school sends final foreign documents straight to ECE (source).

GSAS applicants upload the original-language transcript and the translation in the Educational History section as PDF, TIFF or JPEG (source); Steinhardt and Tandon online applicants upload them to their applications; Wagner wants official records emailed by the school or an e-transcript service to wagner.admissions.docs@nyu.edu, or mailed sealed (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. At NYU that means we translate for the graduate programs whose rules we fit; we are not an agency accredited in your school's country for undergraduate official documents, the ECE authentication and the Steinhardt course-by-course evaluation come from those agencies, and official records come from your school.

Frequently asked questions

Can eVerbary translate my high school transcript for NYU undergraduate admission?

Not for the official documents. NYU names a school official or a translation agency accredited in the country of your school (source), and eVerbary is a US company, not accredited in another country. Ask Undergraduate Admissions, your school, or an agency accredited in your school's country.

Do I have to pay for ECE if NYU admits me from a school outside the US?

No. NYU creates the ECE account and pays; you sign a consent form, and your school sends final documents to ECE by July 15, or January 5 for spring transfers (source).

Does NYU GSAS require a WES evaluation of my foreign transcripts?

No. GSAS advisors evaluate foreign transcripts themselves. Upload the original-language transcript with a certified, literal and complete English translation; a WES report is optional (source).

Does my translator have to be in the US for Tisch graduate programs?

No. Tisch accepts any certified translator wherever based, as long as the translation reaches Tisch directly from the translator (source).

Do I need a course-by-course evaluation for Steinhardt graduate programs?

Yes, if any degree is from outside the US or Canada: from WES, ECE or TEC, together with a certified or notarized translation and the original-language transcript (source).

What format does Tandon need for an online master's program?

Complete and literal, line-by-line, in the layout of the original, on letterhead and signed or stamped by the translator; translations by you or your family are refused (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
